WESTERN WASHINGTON INVITATIONAL RESULTS

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Senior Elis Svard (Sodertalje, Sweden) and freshman Kyle Kuest (Clovis West HS) each earned Top 25 finishes to help Cal State Monterey Bay finish seventh at the season–opening Western Washington Invitational Tuesday at Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Svard carded a 2–under 71 Tuesday and finished in seventh place at 5–under 211 for the tournament. Kuest was 1–over Tuesday afternoon and tied for 22nd place at 1–over 217.

Led by Svard and Kuest, the Otters finished with a final round 290, good for sole possession of seventh on the team leaderboard. That followed rounds of 289 and 292 Monday, leaving the Otters at 7–over, 871 for the 54–hole event.

Senior Brian Whitson (Advance, Mo./Logan College) claimed a spot in the top 30 after shooting 75 Tuesday and finishing 3–over for the tournament to place 29th. Freshman Ryan Parry (Sacramento/Jesuit HS), playing as an individual, and sophomore Hayata Utsunomiya (Osaka, Japan) also finished in the top half of the 102–player field, placing 47th and 49th respectively.

"With the first tournament complete, I thought the two freshmen played solid and our returning All–American, Elis Svard, looked good," said CSUMB Head Coach Jason Owen. "It is only September, but we have a lot of development to do between now and April when postseason starts."

CSUMB will take next week off from competition before heading to Florida to take part in the Golfweek Invitational Oct. 7–8.
