Otters place second, Zoe Offield finishes fourth at CCAA Championship

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — A record–setting effort led Cal State Monterey Bay to a second place finish at the CCAA Women's Golf Championship Tournament Wednesday at the Morgan Run Club and Resort.

CSUMB shot 295 for the second consecutive round Wednesday at 893 (+41). The score is an Otter record relative to par for a 54–hole tournament It breaks the old mark of +43 set at the Dennis Rose Invitational in 2011.

The Otters, ranked No. 30 in the latest GolfStat NCAA Division II rankings, finish as runner–up to No. 3 ranked Cal State San Marcos, which completed the tournament at 872. Of arguably greater significance to Otter fans, however, was who the Otters beat this week.

Ranked No. 10 in the latest NCAA Division II West Region rankings, CSUMB posted a 27–stroke win over No. 8 Sonoma State. The top 12 teams in the final West Region rankings will advance to the NCAA West Regional Championship. Although both teams figure to be in the mix, the strong win over a quality opponent should bolster CSUMB's candidacy.

"I'm really proud of the team. They worked hard and kept getting better with a solid second place finish," said CSUMB Head Coach Jim Ragan. "Our recent play puts us in great position to be selected for the NCAA West Regional."

On the individual front, four of the five Otters playing this week earned Top 10 finishes, led by freshman Zoe Offield (Stockton/Tokay HS) whose 2–over 73 Wednesday helped her secure sole possession of fourth place at 6–over 219 for the tournament. For her Top 5 finish, Offield earned a spot on the CCAA All–Tournament team

Senior Linnea Karlsson (Äkersberga, Sweden), the 36–hole leader, shot a final round 78 and finished alone in sixth at 222. Junior Tarin Leong (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) bounced back from a slow start to finish 71–74 and place ninth at 226. Freshman Roni Rincon (Palm Desert HS) carded CSUMB's low final round with an even–par 71 to earn a share of 10th place at 227.

Senior Alexis Marshall (Vista Murrieta HS) carded her best round of the championship with a 77 Wednesday to close the Otter scoreline.

Now, the Otters will play the waiting game as they look to advance to the NCAA West Regional Championship for the third consecutive season. The West Regional will take place May 6–8 at the Amarillo Country Club in Amarillo, Texas.
