Otters Open CCAA Play With Sweep At Humboldt

CSUMB saves two set points in opening set, rolls to 4th sweep in last 5 matches

ARCATA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team saved a pair of set points in the opening frame then rode that momentum to a 26–24, 25–20, 25–19 win over Humboldt State Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena.

CSUMB improved to 6–2 overall and 1–0 in the CCAA. Humboldt dipped to 3–7 and 0–2.

Facing two set points early, the Otters got a kill from Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) and an ace from Alá Olson (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) to pull even. Erica Chapa (San Benito HS/Gavilan College) and Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) combined for a block and McKean added a kill in transition to seal the set win.

McKean led the Otters with 11 kills and four blocks. Kyra Galloway (San Diego/West Hills HS) served two of CSUMB's six aces. Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) led the backline with 13 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Chandler McKean's kill capped the late Otter rally in the opening set. the Otters trailed briefly just once over the balanc of the match.

ETCHING HER NAME IN THE BOOK… Chandler McKean led the Otters with four blocks Thursday and, in so doing, moved past Brittany Etchings in the No. 8 spot and tie Amber Tygart for the No. 7 spot on the CSUMB career blocks list with 174.

6 AND 2 IS GOOD FOR YOU… The Otters have started the season 6–2 for the second consecutive season. It matches the second–best start in program history (2012, '13, '17). the only Otter volleyball team to start 7–2 or better was the 2010 team which opened 10–1.

FOR (CCAA) OPENERS… The Otters snapped a 6–game skid in CCAA openers with Thursday night's sweep. The last time the Otters had won their CCAA opener prior to Thursday was a sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2012.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Chandler McKean 11; BLOCKS: Chandler McKean 4; ACES: Kyra Galloway 2; ASSISTS: Erica Chapa 28; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 13.

THE LAST WORD… "This was a good road win and a really tough environment. Humboldt played really gritty and their fans were incredible. We didn't play very well and made too many errors, but I'm really proud of our composure and poise. But we need to play better moving forward." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 9–match, season–opening roadtrip by playing at Sonoma State Saturday (Sept. 8). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
