Nine–Match Roadrtip Ends With Tough 4–Set Loss At Sonoma

Sophomore Jenna tobin leads three in double figures with 18 kills

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's 9–match roadtrip to open the season came to a tough end with a 25–21, 25–22, 22–25, 28–26 loss at Sonoma State Saturday night in The Wolves Den.

CSUMB (6–3, 1–1 CCAA) saw three players reach double figures in kills, led by sophomore Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) with a career high 18. Senior middle blocker Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) added 13 kills and four blocks.

Each of the first three sets could have gone either way, but they only set the stage for an epic fourth set in which CSUMB saved four match points before two late Seawolf kills finally ended the affair.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Caiti Wiesner finished an Otter overpass on match point.

SUPER SOPHOMORE… Jenna Tobin's 18 kills matched her career high first set in a sweep of Concordia–Portland on Aug. 31. It marked the third time in nine matches this season that she has reached double figures.

ROAD SWEET ROAD… Even with Saturday's setback, the Otters finished their long season–opening roadtrip with a 6–3 record. It matches the best 9–game stretch on the road in CSUMB history, equaling the mark set by the 2010 team.

BUT NEVER IN ONE FELL SWOOP… Although the 2010 squad did go 6–3 over nine road matches, that stretch came over a 6–week period from Sept. 11 through Oct. 29, 2010. This season's 6–3 mark is by far the best consecutive road streak in program history.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Jenna Tobin 18; BLOCKS: Chandler McKean 4; ACES: Five Otters 1; ASSISTS: Erica Chapa 40; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 9.

THE LAST WORD… "Our defense didn't show up tonight. We did a lot of good things offensively, but so did they and we didn't have an answer. Jenna Tobin and Chandler McKean did a great job keeping things going in the front row but we struggled to keep the ball alive when we needed to." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters (finally) return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to host their 2018 home opener Friday, Sept. 14 against Stanislaus State. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
