Otters Can’t Slow Stanilaus In Home Opener

Warriors hit .340, sweep 25-19, 25-21, 25-20

SEASIDE, Calif. — A record crowd of 717 filled The Kelp Bed for the 2018 Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball home opener versus Stanislaus State Friday night. The crowd's tremendous energy wasn't enough in this one, however, as the Otters came out flat in a 25–19, 25–21, 25–20 defeat.

To its credit, Stanislaus was on fire, committing just nine errors while hitting .340 for the match. CSUMB's normally potent service game never did get Stanislaus out of system on a consistent basis, serving just four aces against 10 errors.

Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) led the Otters with nine kills and 13 digs. Samantha Brennan (Huntington Beach HS) had five kills against no errors and led the frontline with two blocks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Sierra Adams kill snapped a 6–2 Otter run and put Stanislaus ahead 23–19 in the deciding set.

PACKING THEM IN… The 717 fans in The Kelp Bed broke the Otter volleyball record for single–match attendance. It shattered the record of 521 set versus Cal State East Bay last season.

ALMOST PERFECT… Samantha Brennan went the entire match without committing an error (5–0–8) for the fifth time in 10 matches this season. Otter fans may remember that Brennan set a CSUMB record by going 82 errorless swings over eight matches last season.

PICK SIXTH… With seven kills Friday night, Anela Visesio tied Christine Ricketts for No. 6 on the Otter career kills list with 768. She needs seven more to pass Courtney Taubert (2004–07) for the No. 5 spot.

HIGH 5… Ashlynne Armstrong served three of CSUMB's four aces Friday night to pass Nicki Sanderson for No. 5 on the Otter career list with 96. She needs three more aces to pass Dana Grimm (2007–10) for No. 4.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 9.0; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 9; BLOCKS: Samantha Brennan 2; ACES: Ashlynne Armstrong 3; DIGS: Jenna Tobin 13.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really disappointed. We are a better team than that—a much better team—but we keep stopping ourselves from being great. Credit to Stanislaus, they came ready to play and we didn't." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief 2–match homestand by hosting Chico State Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
