Otters Can’t Maintain Late Surge As Chico Holds On To Win In Four

Visesio has team–high 10 kills, Pierson hits .571

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team nearly overcame a slow start with a strong rally before visiting Chico State held on for a 25–11, 25–20, 21–25, 25–14 win Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Chico used strong passing and an even stronger service game to race to a big win in the first set and a big lead early in the second. But a late Otter rally in Set 2 led to a big Otter lead to open the third set as CSUMB extended the match.

CSUMB took a 6–4 lead to begin the fourth set before a 7–0 spurt began a 13–3 Wildcat run that essentially sealed the match.

Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) had a team–high 10 kills while sophomore Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) hit a team–best .571 to lead the offense. Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) led all players with a match–high 14 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Kim Wright served six consecutive points as part of a 7–0 run to give Chico an 11–6 lead in the fourth set. The Otters never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

OF COURSE IT WENT FOUR… Sweeps almost never happen when the Otters and Chico get together on the volleyball court, especially when they meet in The Kelp Bed. Since the Otters became a full NCAA Division II member, only one match 10 meetings in Seaside featured a sweep, and that was CSUMB's 25–16, 25–14, 25–23 win last season. In fact, only four of the 22 meetings between the Wildcats and Otters as full NCAA Division II opponents has ended in a sweep.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Freshman setter Sophia Torres (Temecula/Chaparral HS) saw her first collegiate action Saturday and acquitted herself quite well. She finished with 12 assists and two digs.

WELCOME TO THE CENTURY CLUB… Anela Visesio collected two block assists Saturday versus Chico State to become the 17th player in Otter history with 100 (now 101) career block assists.

McKEAN PASSES MALCOLM… Senior middle blocker Chandler McKean brought her career total to 180 blocks with two Saturday, passing Jessica Malcolm for No. 6 in the Otter record book. Next up is Melanie Lashbrook (2008–11), who sits in fifth with 203 blocks.

LEADERS OF THE PACK… POINTS: Anela Visesio 12.0; KILLS: Anela Visesio 10; BLOCKS: Samantha Brennan 4; ACES: Alá Olson 3; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 14.

THE LAST WORD… "We did a better job responding tonight, but we struggled in serve receive and Chico showed us no mercy. I know our team has what it takes to be great, we just need to believe in our system, in our training and execute when it comes to competition time." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head south for a pair of matches in Greater Los Angeles, beginning Friday (Sept. 21) at Cal State L.A.. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
