Otters Finish Nonconference Schedule 5–2 Following Saturday Split

CSUMB sweeps host Dominican University but falls in four to Point Loma

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team put the finishing touches on its nonconference schedule with a split Saturday at the West Region Crossover Tournament in the Conlan Center. CSUMB swept host Dominican University 25–20, 25–16, 25–15 in the afternoon before being upset by Point Loma University 28–26, 18–25, 25–21, 25–23 in the final match of the evening.

Senior Anlea Visesio (Seaside HS) led the Otter offense once again with 25 kills Saturday, including 14 in the win over Dominican. Sophomore Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) added career–high 11 kills against Point Loma.

Senior libero Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) led the defense with 42 digs, including 24 against Point Loma. Senior setter Erica Chapa (San Benito HS/Gavilan College) passed 67 assists.

THE DOMINICAN MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… CSUMB jumped to a 5–1 lead to open the second set. Dominican never held a lead for the rest of the match.

THE POINT LOMA MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Even though the teams played a deuce fourth set, this match turned in the opening set, when Point Loma saved three set points to rally for a 28–26 victory.

ALL–TOURNAMENT TIME… Erica Chapa earned a spot on the all–tournament team for her play this weekend. Chapa finished with 139 assists (10.69 aps) with 44 digs, 17 kills and two aces.

ON THE BLOCKS… With 15 total blocks in the tournament, Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) leapfrogged Janai Johnson (159) and Julia Ashen (164) into ninth place on the CSUMB career blocks list. McKean now has 170 blocks and, with 10 more blocks, will vault all the way up to the No. 6 spot.

ANOTHER SOLID START… The Otters have opened the season with a solid 5–2 record for the third consecutive season. They have started better than 5–2 just twice in their history, the last time when the 2013 squad opened 6–2 en route to a school–record 18 wins.

LEADERS OF THE PACK… POINTS: Anela Visesio 30.0; KILLS: Anela Visesio 25; BLOCKS: Chandler McKean 10; ACES: Alá Olson 4; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 42.

THE LAST WORD… "I loved what I saw from our program today. So much growth and class from these young women in victory and in defeat. We didn't play our best and still managed to compete against a talented Point Loma team, but fell short at the end. We are looking forward to coming home for a few short days before we are back at it and looking forward to conference getting started." — Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin CCAA play with a long trip up the coast. They'll play at Humboldt State Thursday, Sept. 6 and at Sonoma State Saturday, Sept. 8. First serve both nights will be 7 p.m.
