Duer’s Heroics Lead To CCAA Player of the Week Award

Two clutch game–winning hits lead Otters to series win over Chico State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior catcher/first baseman is turning into quite a job description at Cal State Monterey Bay. For the second consecutive week, an Otter senior catcher/first baseman earned CCAA Player of the Week honors when the conference tabbed Hayden Duer (Davis HS) as the league's top player for the week ending Mar. 11.

Duer follows on the heels of Jacob Tonascia (San Benito HS/Mission College), who claimed POTW recognition for the week ending Mar. 5. It's the second player of the week award for Otter baseball in 2018 and Duer's first time being so honored in his career.

Duer went 7–for–18 (.389) with three doubles and a pair of home runs in a huge series win over Chico State. Though his numbers were solid, it was his clutch performances that put him over the top.

He began the week by ending an epic 15–inning thriller—the longest game in Chico State history and the second longest in CSUMB history—with a 2–run, walk–off double for a 12–11 Otter win in the series opener. In Sunday's doubleheader, he clinched a 3–0 Otter Game 1 victory with a 2–run homer.

But Duer saved his best for last. After Chico rallied to tie the 7–inning series finale at 3–3, He launched a no–doubt solo shot over the scoreboard in left for the game–winning run in CSUMB's 4–3 victory.

Duer enters the week ranked among the CCAA leaders in several statistical categories. He is No. 3 in home runs (5), No. 4 in RBI (22) and No. 7 in doubles (6). He also ranks No 8 in slugging percentage (.583), a category led by Tonascia (.729).

Duer and the No. 20 ranked Otters return to action this weekend by traveling to Turlock for a 4–game set against highly–regarded Stanislaus State. The series in scheduled to begin Friday evening. Be sure to follow @CSUMBbaseball on Twitter for the latest updates as weather may affect game dates and times.

CSUMB (14–4 overall, 8–4 CCAA) enters the week atop the CCAA standings. Stanislaus (12–8, 8–6) is one game back.
