SEASIDE, Calif. — There's a lot a stake for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team this weekend with Cal State San Bernardino (Friday) and Cal Poly Pomona (Saturday) visiting The Kelp Bed for a pair of CCAA games. With two wins, the Otters could move to within a game of a CCA Tournament position with six games to play.
Fans who can't make it to The Kelp Bed for either game can catch all of the action live online. Like all Otter home games, fans can watch live locally on Ch. 73 as well as the
Otter live stream. Kirsten Fairchild will have the call both nights. Live stats both for both games will be available at
OtterAthletics.com.
COYOTE 3–DOT NOTES (7–11, 5–9 CCAA): The Coyotes snapped a 3–game skid with an 89–71 win at Dominguez Hills Saturday night…are 2–6 on the road this season…haven't won consecutive CCAA games since Feb. 11–17, 2017…Prairie View A&M transfer Kaitlyn Parks (Sr./C) is the only Coyote scoring in double figures (10.1 ppg)…UC Irvine transfer Ariana Knox (Jr./F) adds 9.7 ppg and a team–leading 6.7 rpg.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Otters played a solid 25 minutes before a 15–0 San Bernardino run midway through the second half rallied the Coyotes to a 65–60 win Dec. 30 in Coussoulis Arena.
Aubri Smith led three Otters in double figures with 17 points. Kaitlyn Parks did the same for San Bernardino.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: The Otters avenged a lopsided loss to San Francisco State earlier in the season with one of the best road performances in school history to post a 73–47 win last Saturday night in The Swamp. Eleven different Otters scored in the game, led
Christine Golfo and
Emily Hardin with 15 points apiece. Hardin's 15 were her career high.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Camille Parker rebounded the miss of a short Kayleigh Pugh jumper with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The Otters grabbed 53 rebounds and made 11 3–pointers (both No. 3 on their respective Otter lists) in a 70–44 win at Cal State Stanislaus on Jan. 26, 2013.
AN HISTORIC WIN… CSUMB's 26–point margin of victory matched its third largest road win as an NCAA Division II institution. It was the biggest Otter road win since a 52–21 win at Cal State East Bay on Feb. 5, 2011.
ON THE REBOUND… Led by
Courtney Keaton's ninth double figure rebounding game of the season (11 boards), CSUMB out–rebounded the Gators 43–25. That's its largest rebounding edge of 2017–18.
NUMBER 6 WITH A BULLET… With 11 rebounds Saturday at San Francisco State,
Courtney Keaton moved to within striking distance of
Brittani Jefferson for the No. 5 spot on the CSUMB career rebounding list. Keaton begins the week with 435 and needs 10 to surpass Jefferson's 444. If Keaton maintains her current pace, she will become just the fourth player in Otter history to surpass 500 career rebounds.
SMITH RETURNS: After missing her first collegiate game Friday at Sonoma State due to a minor injury, senior guard
Aubri Smith returned to action Saturday at San Francisco State. The blowout nature of the win allowed Smith to play a season–low eight minutes.
A HELPING HAND…OR 154 HANDS: With two assists Saturday in San Francisco,
Aubri Smith inched closer to the No. 7 spot in Otter career assists with 156. She needs four more to pass
Stephanie Sack (2014–15) for No. 7 all–time.
OTTERS AMONG THE CCAA LEADERS: Aubri Smith's 13.2 ppg ranks her No. 11 on the CCAA scoring chart as we move into the final eight games of the 2017–18 season. Other Otters amongst the leaders include: REBOUNDING: No. 5
Courtney Keaton (9.4 rpg); ASSISTS: No. 11
Aubri Smith (3.0 apg); STEALS: No. 8
Courtney Keaton (1.8 spg), No. 10
Aubri Smith (1.7 spg).
WHY PLAY 40 MINUTES? The final five minutes have been all but irrelevant. CSUMB is 12–0 when leading after 35 and 0–33 when trailing after 35 dating back to the 2015–16 season.
THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. With Saturday's 73–47 win at San Francisco State, CSUMB is now 41–5 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Up that number to 80 points and the numbers get even more impressive. The Otters have won 15 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.
GO OTTERS!
