TRITON 3–DOT NOTES (6–2, 2–0 CCAA): The Tritons are the only CCAA team currently receiving any attention on a national level, receiving votes in the latest D2SIDA Top 25…UCSD currently leads the CCAA by allowing just 59.4 ppg and by holding a 10.5 ppg scoring advantage…also No. 2 in the CCAA in rebounding Margin ( 9.5)…the Triton stats ledger is led by a pair of double–double players: Mikayla Williams (So./F) averages 14.0 ppg (No. 10 CCAA) and 11.4 rpg (No. 3 CCAA) and Dalayna Sampton (Sr./F) at 13.9 ppg (No. 12 CCAA) and 10.4 rpg (No. 5 CCAA).
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Otters stayed close for a half, but UCSD opened a 10–point lead early in the third quarter and never let the Otters catch up en route to a 75–53 win in RIMAC Arena last February. McKenna Hill scored 11 points and
Courtney Keaton pulled down eight rebounds to lead MB. Dalayna Sampton led four Tritons in double figures with 15 points.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: To wear out an oft used cliché, the Otters were simply ice cold Saturday night, making just seven of 35 from the floor in the first half of a 65–36 loss to Cal State East Bay. The Otters scored a school record–low four points in the second quarter as East Bay built a 40–14 lead by halftime.
Aubri Smith led the MB offense with eight points.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Janae Chamois 3–pointer made it 56–24 East Bay with 47 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: CSUMB's last Dec. 8 performance was a successful one as it defeated Cal State East Bay 51–38 in Pioneer Gym on Dec. 8, 2012.
ICE COLD… The Otters finished a season–low 22 percent (15–of–68) from the floor.
BOMBS NOT AWAY… The Otters went 132 consecutive games making at least one 3–pointer from 2013–17. Their latest streak didn't last quite as long. CSUMB went 0–for–9 from beyond the arc Saturday night, ending their current streak at three games.
LOW 2–FER… By scoring 76 combined points in its last two games, the Otter posted their lowest 2–game total since joining the NCAA for the 2004–05 season. It's the lowest 2–game total since scoring 75 points against Dominican and San Jose Christian Jan. 24–27, 2004.
TWO OF A KIND: With games of 27 and 29 points in her last six games,
Aubri Smith now owns two of the Top 10 scoring games in CSUMB history. She joins all–time lead scorer Dana Andrews (5) as the only Otter players to have at two games ranked in the Top 10.
OTTERS AMONG THE CCAA LEADERS: Aubri Smith's 17.0 ppg ranks her No. 5 on the CCAA scoring chart as we pass the quarter pole of the regular season. Other Otters amongst the leaders include: REBOUNDING: No. 8
Courtney Keaton (8.1 rpg); ASSISTS: No. 6
Aubri Smith (4.1 apg); STEALS: No. 9
Aubri Smith (2.0 spg).
WHY PLAY 40 MINUTES? Last Thursday men's victory over Humboldt State broke a long streak. An Otter team won when trailing with five minutes to play for the first time in 68 games. Since the start of 2016–17, the Otter men are now 6–0 when leading after 35 minutes and 1–28 when trailing after 35 minutes. The women, meanwhile, are 10–0 when leading after 35 and 0–25 when trailing after 35.
THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. With the Nov. 17 71–70 win at Cal State L.A., CSUMB is now 40–5 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Up that number to 80 points and the numbers get even more impressive. The Otters have won 15 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.
GO OTTERS!
