SEASIDE, Calif.—Coming off a last-second loss in its last real game, the Cal State Monterey Bay men]s basketball team will look to returning to winning ways by closing the 2017 calendar year with a tough roadtrip to Cal Poly Pomona Friday (Dec. 29) and Cal State San Bernardino Saturday (Dec. 30). The trip sets up a 3–game homestand to open 2018 for CSUMB.
Pomona enters the week two games ahead of the Otters as we near the midway point of the season while San Bernardino comes in one-half game back of CSUMB. The teams will return the games at CSUMB on Jan. 26-27.
Live stats and video for both games will be available on the schools respective websites:
www.BroncoAthletics.com and
www.CSUSBAthletics.com. Rob Ponce will have the call both nights on
KION 101.5 FM and the iHeartRadio app.
BRONCO 3–DOT NOTES (7–2, 4–1 CCAA): The Broncos have started strong after coming off a rare sub–.500 year in 2016–17…it was Pomona's first losing season since 2007–08 and just its second losing season in the last 21…saw its 7–game winning streak snapped in a 70–65 loss at San Bernardino in its last game…Jordan Ogundiran (Jr./G) and Williams Christmas (So./G) lead a top–heavy scoring chart at 18.0 and 15.2 ppg respectively…Christmas is the team's top rebounder at 7.9 rpg.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Otters twice had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead inside the final 13 minutes, but couldn't get over the hump before Cal Poly pulled away down the stretch for a 58–42 win in The Kelp Bed on Jan. 27 last season.
Gregg Polosky and
Matt Bejsovec led the Otters with 10 points apiece. Riley Schaefer scored 12 points to lead the Broncos.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: This one went down to the wire before San Francisco State scored with 2.7 seconds remaining in regulation to pull out an 84–82 win Sunday in The Kelp Bed. CSUMB set school records with 18 3–point field goals and 40 3–point attempts (more below).
Jahvon Johnson led all scorers with 20 points.
Mateo Jones pulled down a game–high 11 rebounds.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Mateo Jones' desperation 3–point attempt didn't fall as the final buzzer sounded.
WELCOME ABOARD ISAAC WILLIAMS: Isaac Williams comes to CSUMB after posting a 120–41 record in five seasons as head coach at Eastern Oregon University. He replaced Rob Bishop, who went 86–157 in nine seasons with the Otters. Williams led EOU to a 24–9 record and the second round of the NAIA Championship Tournament in 2016–17.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: D'Shon Cannon had eight assists in a 90–53 win over Fontbonne University on Dec. 29, 2005. Combined with the nine helpers he had two days earlier at Hawaii–Hilo, his 17 assists remain the highest 2–game total in CSUMB men's basketball history.
BOMBS AWAY: CSUMB's 18 3–point field goals against San Francisco State broke the school record of 15 set twice previously, last at Humboldt State on Feb. 15, 2008. The 40 3–point attempts broke the record of 39 set in the same game.
SPREADING THE WEALTH: The big shooting night was a team effort as seven of the nine Otters who saw action Sunday made at least one.
Koen Sapwell led the way by going 6–for–9 from long range. Fellow freshman
Josh Kollman (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) made four.
TWENTY TIMES FOUR: Jahvon Johnson recorded his fourth 20–point game of the season Dec. 17 versus S.F. State. As a team, the Otters posted just six total 20–point games in all of 2016–17. Kevin Warren led the way with three of the six.
DOUBLE DOUBLE–DOUBLES: Mateo Jones complete his second consecutive double–double (and his third of the season) with his 11–point, 16–rebound effort Dec. 2 versus East Bay. He is fourth player in Otter history to do it and the first to post consecutive double–doubles since Joe Mitchell turned the trick at Humboldt State and Cal State L.A. Jan. 3–10, 2009.
AMONG THE CCAA LEADERS: Mateo Jones enters the week ranked No. 2 the CCAA in rebounding (9.2 rpg) and No. 4 in steals (2.1 spg). Other Otters among the leaders include: BLOCKS:
Gregg Polosky (No. 7, 1.0 bpg); REBOUNDING:
Gregg Polosky (No. 9, 7.3 rpg); ASSISTS:
Jonquis Bouyea (No. 15, 2.7 apg); 3-pt FG pct.:
Josh Kollman (No. 5, .406); 3-pt FG per game:
Josh Kollman (No. 3, 2.9/g),
Koen Sapwell (No. 9, 2.3/g).
WORKING OVERTIME: CSUMB's OT win at UCSD on Dec. 8 was its third overtime game of the season. That matches its most overtime games since the Otters played a school–record four such contests in 2006–07.
60 SHALL BE THE NUMBER, NO LESS—NO MORE! The 55–54 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Nov. 18 snapped a 53–game run in which the Otters hadn't won while scoring few than 60 points in NCAA Division II play. The streak dated back to the 2004–05 season, their first at the NCAA Division II level. Prior to Saturday's win, the last time the Otters scored fewer than 60 points and beat a Division II foe was a 54–53 decision over Cal Poly Pomona in The Kelp Bed on Jan. 29, 2005.
WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have usually been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. Despite two loss when scoring 80 in regulation so far this season (93–87 loss to Central Washington and 84–82 to San Francisco State), CSUMB is 42–6 (.913) in its last 48 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation dating to the 2007–08 season.
GO OTTERS!
