FULL ALL–CCAA VOLLEYBALL TEAMS
SEASIDE, Calif. — An already historic season for the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team became even more special Wednesday when
Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS),
Erica Chapa (San Benito HS/Gavilan College) and
Amber Tygart (Yucaipa HS) earned All–CCAA honors, the conference office announced.
Underwood is a first team selection while Chapa and Tygart earned second team honors. It marks the first time in program history that three Otter volleyball players have been so honored in a season.
"I'm thrilled to see these three young women representing CSUMB on the all–conference teams this year. They are tremendous young women and perfect examples of what we expect from athletes in our program: hard working, driven and selfless individuals," says CSUMB Head Coach
Moe Melhart. "It has been a great and joy to watch these young women work so hard this season and what a great honor for Maddy, Amber and Erica."
Underwood joins Julia Ashen (2012, 13), Rheann Fall (2010, 11) and Brittany Etchings (2006) as Otter volleyball players who have earned first team All–CCAA recognition. She leads the team and ranks No. 6 in the CCAA with 299 kills this season. She enters the postseason ranked No. 8 in CSUMB history with 693 kills.
Chapa is enjoying arguably the finest season by a setter in Otter history. Her average of 10.13 assists per game ranks just behind Kelsey Johnston's record of 10.39 (2013). Her assist numbers are a bit lower because she also has put down a CSUMB setter–record of 107 kills this season.
For her part, Tygart is enjoying the most efficient season by a pin hitter in Otter history. Her .309 attack percentage in 2017 leads all CCAA outside hitters and is the best ever by an Otter outside hitter. She also ranks No. 6 in CSUMB history with 162 block assists and No. 7 with 174 total blocks.
Underwood, Chapa and Tygart will lead the Otter volleyball team to its first postseason match in its NCAA era when the Otters face Cal State San Bernardino in the opening round of the CCAA Championship Tournament Thursday on the campus of San Francisco State. The Otters will play at 7:30 p.m. as the final quarterfinal match.
