Otters Cage Cougars To Complete Weekend Sweep

Otters rally for 5-set win over San Marcos

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay received significant contributions from its entire lineup to earn a hard-fought 22–25, 25–20, 16–25, 25–20, 15–8 win over Cal State San Marcos in a Saturday matinée at The Kelp Bed.

Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) led the offense, as usual, with a match-high 15 kills. She was joined atop the leaderboard by a pair of rookies who each enjoyed their best days as Otters. Freshman Milan Harvey (Bartlett, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS) and MPC transfer Kayla Smith (Conway, Ark./Conway HS) each posted career highs with 13 and 12 kills respectively.

The contributions didn't stop there. Senior opposite Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) and sophomore middle Talula Crandell (Loomis/Del Oro HS) put down a career-high seven blocks, with Crandell needing just three sets to accomplish that feat.

But the player of the match was senior middle Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS), who not only matched her career high with seven blocks, but also played incredible defense with a career-high eight digs while serving a career-high four aces.

The opening set featured high-level volleyball from both teams, with San Marcos hitting .359 to CSUMB's .270 to pull out the 25–22 win. It became a battle of whatever-it-takes-to-survive from that point, as the teams traded punches for the balance of the match.

The Otters landed the first blow, rallying from an early 12–7 seven deficit before scoring six of the set's final eight points to level the match at 1–1. The Cougars appeared to land a haymaker when they pulled away midway through the third set for a convincing 25–16 win and a 2–1 match lead.

But CSUMB got up off the mat, sprinted to a 7–0 lead, and led wire-to-wire in the fourth to force a deciding fifth set. The Otters then used three blocks and a pair of aces to race to an 8–4 lead before easing away to secure the victory.

SATURDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… After San Marcos pulled away for a convincing third-set win, the Otters opened the fourth set by scoring the first seven points. They never trailed again for the balance of the match.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Saturday's win over Cal State San Marcos, combined with Friday's victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills, completed CSUMB's second weekend sweep of the season. The Otters previous swept Cal Poly Humboldt and Dominguez Hills the week of Sept. 18-19.

THEY'RE ACES… Sofia MacPherson and Malia Thorne each served a career-high four aces in Saturday's win over Cal State San Marcos. That is tied for No. 9 on the Otter list for aces in a 5-set match. As a team, CSUMB served 11 aces, tied for No. 14 in Otter history.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS… The Otters collected 17.0 blocks in Saturday's win over Cal State San Marcos, the third-most in a match in Otter history. They're the most blocks by an Otter team since they had a school-record 18.0 at Concordia-Portland on Sept. 6, 2019.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVENS… Talula Crandell, Malia Thorne and Abby Witzansky all collected a career-high seven blocks in Saturday's win over Cal State San Marcos. It marks the first time in Otter history that three players had seven or more blocks in the same match.

PETERSON JOINS 600-KILL CLUB… With 15 kills Saturday against Cal State San Marcos, Malia Peterson became just the 13th player in program history to reach 600 kills. She sits in 13th place all-time with 606 kills. She needs 31 more to pass Melanie Lashbrook (2008-11) for No. 12.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Malia Peterson 15.5; KILLS: Malia Peterson 15; BLOCKS: Talula Crandell/Malia Thorne/Abby Witzansky 7; ACES: Sofia MacPherson/Malia Thorne 4; DIGS: Macey Camacho/Malia Peterson 16.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters take to the road for the final time in 2026 next week when they head to the other Bay Area for matches at San Francisco State (Thursday) and Cal State East Bay (Saturday). They return home to close the season Nov. 7 when they host Menlo College.
