SEASIDE, Calif. — After capping 2016 with a 19-point victory at Humboldt State the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team will kicoff 2017 by hosting CCAA-leading UC San Diego Thursday (Jan.5 ). The Otters will close their brief homestand Saturday by welcoming former Head Coach Renee Jimenez and her Cal State San Marcos Cougars for a Saturday matinee.

Both games are part of men's/women's doubleheader action. The women will tipoff Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Fans who can't make it to The Kelp Bed can watch live on Campus Televido Ch. 73.1 or online at www.OtterAthletics.com. Embele Awipi will have the call Thursday night and Kevin Richardson will have the mike Saturday.

TRITON 3–DOT NOTES (9–3, 5–1 CCAA): The Tritons are right back atop the CCAA table after earning a share of the CCAA title in 2016…only losses are at nationally–ranked Western Washington and Seattle Pacific and a road loss at Cal Poly Pomona…UCSD leads the CCAA in scoring offense (71.1 ppg) despite not having an individual ranked in the top 17…Sr./P Cassie MacLeod leads the balanced attack at 11.5 ppg.

WHEN LAST WE MET: Despite leading by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Otters couldn't close the door on No. 18 UCSD before it battled back to with 67–57 last Jan. 16. Victoria Dorn led CSUMB with 19 points. Faraah Shokoor had 24 points and a (then) CSUMB opponent–record 19 rebounds to lead the Tritons.

"EXPENSIVE" THROWS: The last time the Otters and Tritons met, free throws proved to be a luxury the Otters couldn't afford. For the first (and, to date only) time ever, the Otters did not attempt a free throw in the entire game. UCSD went 18–for–27 from the stripe, which proved to the difference in its 67–57 win.

WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: The Otter led virtually wire–to–wire in a 66–47 win at Humboldt State Saturday night. The Otters got the lead to double digits early in the second quarter and kept the Lumberjacks at arm's length for the duration. McKenna Hill scored 18 points to lead the Otters.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Courtney Keaton hit a free throw to make it 58–40 good guys with 2:54 to play.

NEW FEATURE: STATISTICALLY OVER… You'll notice a new feature in the CSUMB notebooks (and postgame recaps) called, The Game Was Statistically Over When…. This uses a formula created by famed sabermatician Bill James to calculate the precise second at which one team gained a lead which (statistically) could not be overcome.

THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The Otters' played the longest game in their history on Jan. 5, 2013 when they fell in triple overtime at Cal State L.A. 72–68. Stephanie Corgel's mad–dash 3–pointer at the buzzer sent the game to OT at 45–45 before a Jessica Fontenette putback at the buzzer sent the game to OT number two.

NUMBER ONE IN THREES: Senior guard Victoria Dorn entered the week ranked No. 1 nationally with 53 3–point field goals made (Mikesia Moore of Benedict College is No. 2 with 51). Not only is she well on pace to break the CSUMB season record of 73 set by Dana Andrews in 2008, but she is also on pace to break Andrews' Otter career record of 178 set from 2006–09. Dorn enters Thursday's game versus UCSD with 143.

McKENNA 500: With 12 total rebounds last week, McKenna Hill became the third player in Otter history to grab 500 career rebounds. She joins Krista Herr (643) and Holly Holcomb (622) in that exclusive club.

HOLDIN' STEADY: McKenna Hill remains firmly ensconced in the No. 3 spot on the Otter career scoring chart with 857 points. At her current pace, she will end her career as one of only two Otters ever to score 1,000 career points. Dana Andrews owns the MB record with 1,359 points scored from 2006–09.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: After allowing just 62.3 points per game last season, the Otters are up to their old defensive tricks again by this season, allowing 63.3 ppg. The Otters have held their opponents under 70 points per game for seven consecutive seasons.

70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. Despite the 72–70 loss at Academy of Art on Dec. 17, CSUMB is 38–5 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Up that number to 80 points and the numbers get even more impressive. The Otters have won 14 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.
