SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team returns to The Kelp Bed for a brief 2-game homestand this weekend when Cal Poly Pomona visits Friday (Jan. 27) and Humboldt State visits Saturday (Jan. 28). Both games tipoff at 5:30 p.m. as the openers of men's/women's doubleheader action.

Fans who can't make it to The Kelp Bed can follow the action on local TV (Ch. 73) and online (OtterAthletics.com). Embele Awipi has the mike for Friday's action versus Pomona while Kirsten Fairchild has call Saturday.

The Otters will try to snap a 6-game skid versus Pomona before going for a season sweep of Humboldt. CSUMB defeated Humboldt 66-47 in their first meeting this season.

BRONCO 3–DOT NOTES (9–8, 6–4 CCAA): The Broncos are in the thick of the CCAA Tournament chase thanks to a stingy defense allowing just 58.6 ppg…that mark ranks No. 2 in the CCAA and No. 4 in the West Region…do not have a win streak longer than two games this season but have won two of their last three…Chaffey College transfer Jr./F Chelsea Waddy–Blow is the lone Bronco scoring in double figures at 13.1 ppg.

WHEN LAST WE MET: Pomona held just three brief leads in the game, but the last one was the only one that mattered as a Mary Williams putback with 14 seconds remaining lifted the Broncos to a 61–60 win last season in Kellogg Gym. Stephanie Sack led three Otters in double figures with 13 points. Williams scored 21 of her game–high 29 points in the second half.

WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: The Otters played a solid final 27 minutes, out–scoring Cal State L.A. over that span 60–48. But L.A. had raced to a commanding 24–2 lead by that point and CSUMB's valiant comeback effort ultimately fell eight points short in a 70–62 setback. McKenna Hill led the Otters with 20 points. Christine Golfo added 11 points off the bench.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… De'Ja Jackson's free throw made it 67–58 Golden Eagles with 25 seconds remaining.

NEW FEATURE: STATISTICALLY OVER… You'll notice a new feature in the CSUMB notebooks (and postgame recaps) called, The Game Was Statistically Over When…. This uses a formula created by famed sabermatician Bill James to calculate the precise second at which one team gained a lead which (statistically) could not be overcome.

THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The last time the Otters played on a Jan. 27th they led for the final 27:43 but had to withstand a late rally to defeat Cal State Dominguez Hills 60–56 in The Torodome on Jan. 27, 2012. Brandi Stephens led the Otters with 14 points.

TOP FIVE TORI: After going without a 3–pointer for just the second time this season, senior guard Victoria Dorn slipped to No. 5 nationally in 3–point field goals made with 61. She trails national leader Mikesia Moore of Benedict College (65) by four entering the week. Not only is she well on pace to break the CSUMB season record of 73 set by Dana Andrews in 2008, but she is also on pace to break Andrews' Otter career record of 178 set from 2006–09. Dorn enters Tonight's game at Cal State L.A. with 152.

NEXT STOP 1,000: McKenna Hill climbed the final attainable rung on the CSUMB scoring ladder by moving into the No. 2 spot with (now) 937 points. At her current pace, she will end her career as one of only two Otters ever to score 1,000 career points. Dana Andrews owns the MB record with 1,359 points scored from 2006–09.

WHY PLAY 40 MINUTES? The final five minutes of games have been all but irrelevant for the Otter men's and women's basketball teams this season. The Otter men are 3–0 when leading after 35 minutes and 0–14 when trailing after 35 minutes. The women, meanwhile, are 4–0 when leading after 35 and 0–13 when trailing after 35.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: After allowing just 62.3 points per game last season, the Otters are up to their old defensive tricks again by this season, allowing 63.7 ppg. The Otters have held their opponents under 70 points per game for seven consecutive seasons.

20–20 SCORING VISION: McKenna Hill recorded her second 20–point game of the season (5th of her career) with 20 Saturday night at Cal State L.A. She and Victoria Dorn have split CSUMB's four 20–point games this season.

70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. Despite the 72–70 loss at Academy of Art on Dec. 17, CSUMB is 38–5 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Up that number to 80 points and the numbers get even more impressive. The Otters have won 14 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.
