PIONEER 3–DOT NOTES (8–7, 5–3 CCAA): East Bay was on a mini roll until UCSD snapped the Pioneers' 3–game win streak last Saturday night…rank No. 3 in the CCAA in scoring defense at 61.4 ppg allowed…Sr./G Shomari Harris, a transfer from Texas A&M Commerce, ranks No. 2 on the CCAA scoring list at 15.6 ppg…she is the only Pioneer scoring in double figures…Sr./F Remy Puou is the No. 8 CCAA rebounder at 6.9 rpg.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Otters raced to a 9–point lead after one quarter, but a 26–10 blitz in the second quarter gave East Bay the lead and it held on for a 68–62 win in The Kelp Bed on Dec. 2.
Victoria Dorn led the Otters with a career–high 25 points. Shomari Harris scored 21 for the Pioneers.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: The Otters rallied back to within two points late versus Cal State San Marcos, but a 4–shot possession eventually gave the Cougars a 4–point lead and they made a pair of late free throws to pull out a 58–52 win last Saturday in The Kelp Bed.
McKenna Hill led the Otters with 12 points.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Kaitlyn Reina grabbed the rebound of a missed short jumper by
Aubri Smith with eight seconds remaining and San Marcos leading 58–52.
NEW FEATURE: STATISTICALLY OVER… You'll notice a new feature in the CSUMB notebooks (and postgame recaps) called,
The Game Was Statistically Over When…. This uses a formula created by famed sabermatician Bill James to calculate the precise second at which one team gained a lead which (statistically) could not be overcome.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The Otters have lost all four of their previous Jan. 14 games and—curiously enough—all four of those games were against UC San Diego. The last time was a 93–61 loss at UCSD on Jan. 14, 2012.
NUMBER TWO IN THREES: Entering the week, senior guard
Victoria Dorn ranks No. 2 nationally with 56 3–point field goals made (Mikesia Moore of Benedict College is No. 1 with 60). Not only is she well on pace to break the CSUMB season record of 73 set by Dana Andrews in 2008, but she is also on pace to break Andrews' Otter career record of 178 set from 2006–09. Dorn enters Saturday's game versus San Marcos with 146.
NEXT STOP 1,000: McKenna Hill remains firmly ensconced in the No. 3 spot on the Otter career scoring chart with 891 points. At her current pace, she will end her career as one of only two Otters ever to score 1,000 career points. Dana Andrews owns the MB record with 1,359 points scored from 2006–09.
WHY PLAY 40 MINUTES? The final five minutes of games have been all but irrelevant for the Otter men's and women's basketball teams this season. The Otter men are 3–0 when leading after 35 minutes and 0–11 when trailing after 35 minutes. The women, meanwhile, are 4–0 when leading after 35 and 0–11 when trailing after 35.
THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: After allowing just 62.3 points per game last season, the Otters are up to their old defensive tricks again by this season, allowing 62.9 ppg. The Otters have held their opponents under 70 points per game for seven consecutive seasons.
70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. Despite the 72–70 loss at Academy of Art on Dec. 17, CSUMB is 38–5 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Up that number to 80 points and the numbers get even more impressive. The Otters have won 14 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.
GO OTTERS!
