Women's Basketball | December 14, 2016

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team will conclude the nonconference portion of its schedule Saturday afternoon (Dec. 17) by traveling to The City to take on Pac West Conference rival Academy of Art in Kezar Pavilion. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Live stats and video will be available on ArtUAthletics.com. The fee for the video stream will be $8.

Saturday's game will be the final one for the Otters prior to the Christmas break. They'll return to action Dec. 29 at Chico State.

URBAN KNIGHT 3–DOT NOTES (5–4 overall): You could say that, after losing seven seniors this is a bit of a rebuilding season for the Urban Knights, except for nine of the 12 players on the roster are still upperclass…Jr./G Rodericka Ware leads the team and ranks No. 5 in the Pac West in scoring at 17.3 ppg…Ware also ranks No. 6 in the PWC at 4.0 assists per game.

WHEN LAST WE MET: Urban Knight senior guard Jasmin Guinn scored a CSUMB opponent record 35 points as Academy of Art opened a 53–29 halftime lead en route to an 88–68 win at the Pioneer Thanksgiving Shootout on Nov. 27, 2015. Jazmine Johnson led the Otters with 17 points.

WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: It was absolute heartbreak for the Otters as Sonoma State knocked down a 3–pointer with one second remaining to 68–67 decision last Saturday at the College of Marin. Brianna Tucker scored a career–high 17 points and passed a career–high eight assists to lead the Otters.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Carly Gill hit what proved to be the game–winner with one second to play, but the game wasn't over until the Otters couldn't get a desperation shot as time expired.

NEW FEATURE: STATISTICALLY OVER… You'll notice a new feature in the CSUMB notebooks (and postgame recaps) called, The Game Was Statistically Over When…. This uses a formula created by famed sabermatician Bill James to calculate the precise second at which one team gained a lead which (statistically) could not be overcome.

THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The Otters will be making history by playing their first–ever Dec. 17th game Saturday afternoon at Academy of Art.

LEADER OF THE PACK Senior guard Victoria Dorn entered the week leading the nation with 41 3–point field goals made. Not only is she well on pace to break the CSUMB season record of 73 set by Dana Andrews in 2008, but she is also on pace to break Andrews' Otter career record of 178 set from 2006–09.

FREE THROWS ARE COSTLY, ACTUALLY: Far from being free, free throws cost the Otters a victory in Saturday's 1–point loss to Sonoma State. The Seawolves made a remarkable 27–of–28 (.964) from the stripe, setting a CSUMB opponent record in the process. Sonoma broke the record of .955 (21–of–22) set by Cal State L.A on Jan. 18, 2008.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: After averaging 16.0 turnovers per game over the first four games, the Otters have done a much better job taking carer of the rock. The Otters are averaging just 12. 8 turnovers per game since then, including just nine Saturday at Sonoma State.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: After allowing just 62.3 points per game last season, the Otters are up to their old defensive tricks again by this season, allowing 62.8 ppg. The Otters have held their opponents under 70 points per game for seven consecutive seasons.

MOVIN' ON UP: With 11 rebounds last weekend, McKenna Hill moved within eight rebounds of 500 with 492. She will join Krista Herr (643) and Holly Holcomb (622) as the only Otters to collect 500 rebounds.

HOLDIN' STEADY: McKenna Hill remains firmly ensconced in the No. 3 spot on the Otter career scoring chart with 821 points. At her current pace, she will end her career as one of only two Otters ever to score 1,000 career points. Dana Andrews owns the MB record with 1,359 points scored from 2006–09.

70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. With the 81–73 win over Holy Names on Nov. 20, CSUMB is now 38–4 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Up that number to 80 points and the numbers get even more impressive. The Otters have won 14 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.
