SEASIDE, Calif.—The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team will open its 2016-17 season with a trip to Oregon for their version of the CCAA/GNAC Crossover Tournament Friday and Saturday in Portland. The Otters will face host Concordia-Portland Friday (Nov. 11) at 6:30 p.m. before meeting Central Washington Saturday (Nov. 12) at 12:30 p.m.
Live stats and video stream will be available on the Concordia website (www.gocugo) for Both games.
OPPONENT 3–DOT NOTES (6–22, 4–16 GNAC): Concordia–Portland is in its second season of transition to the NCAA Division II level…amongst the Crusaders six wins last season was 64–41 win over CCAA foe San Francisco State…lost their leading scorer from last season, Sierra Dean, who was the only Crusader to average in double digits (12.3 ppg)…team features three new 4–year transfers, including DI bounce backs Jordyn Peacock (New Mexico) and Georgia Williams (Columbia).
WHEN LAST WE MET: This will be the first meeting ever between the Otters and the Cavaliers in women's basketball.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: Eventual CCAA champion Cal State East Bay raced to an early lead and never looked back, handing the Otters a 69–44 set back in the Otters' season finale on Feb. 27.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Laci Effenberger hit a 3–pointer with 5:20 remaining to give East Bay its first 20–point lead of the game at 61–41 with 5:20 remaining. The Otters had pulled to within four points late in the third before Effenberger's trey capped a 19–3 Pioneer run.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: Although the Otters have never played on a Nov. 11, Friday's season–opener will mark just the second time the Otters have opened a season before Nov. 13. The last time they opened this earlier, they kicked off the
Kerri Nakamoto era by scoring a school record 98 points in a 98–70 win over Dixie State on Nov. 9, 2013.
FOR OPENERS: After winning seven consecutive openers from 2008–09 to 2014–15, the Otters have dropped their last two lid–lifters, including an 88–78 setback to Dominican University last season. The Otters are 7–6 in 13 season openers at the NCAA Division II level.
TOURNEY TIME: The Otters are 17–13 all–time in regular season tournament action at the NCAA Division II level. They are 14–4 in their last 18 such games. They are 5–3 in tournament play under
Kerri Nakamoto.
ON THE REBOUND: While firmly ensconced in the No. 3 spot on the Otter career scoring chart (726 points),
McKenna Hill is also making her way up the Otter career rebounding chart, entering Friday's game at No. 6 on that list with 411. She needs five more to catch Julie Heurung (416) for the No. 5 spot. Krista Herr (2005–08) owns the Otter record with 643.
BOMBS AWAY: Victoria Dorn enters her senior season with 90 3–point field goals, good for fifth on the CSUMB career list. She needs just 13 more to pass Holly Holcomb for No. 2 on that list. Dana Andrew (2006–09) holds the Otter career record with 178 threes.
THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: After allowing just 69.4 points per game in 2014–15, the Otters were up to their old defensive tricks again by last season, allowing 62.3 ppg. The Otters have held their opponents under 70 points per game for seven consecutive seasons.
WORKING OVERTIME: The Otters improved to 7–3 in overtime games at the NCAA level with a pair of extra time victories in 2015–16. CSUMB has played only two Division II seasons (2006 & 2012) without playing at least one overtime game.
KEEPING IT ON THE DOWN LOW: The Otters finally broke their streak by scoring 75 points in a Feb. 19 win over Cal State L.A.. Prior to that, they hadn't scored 70 points in a game since scoring 78 in a season–opening loss to Dominican University—a stretch of 23 games. It was the longest such streak in MB history, eclipsing a 22–game run from Jan. 9–Dec. 13, 2009.
70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. CSUMB enters the season 36–4 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Up that number to 80 points and the numbers get even more impressive. The Otters have won 16 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.
GO OTTERS!
