Men's Basketball | November 28, 2016

SEASIDE, Calif.—The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team will get its final chance to prep for its grueling CCAA slate when it hosts Pac West Conference rival Holy Names University Tuesday (Nov. 29) at 7 p.m. The Otters (2–3) are looking to even their overall record before welcoming Cal State East Bay (Friday) and Cal State San Bernardino (Saturday) to begin conference action.

Fans who can't make it to The Kelp Bed for Tuesday's game can watch or listen to the Otter simulcast. Rob Ponce and Alex Hudson will have the call on KION Radio 101.1 FM while Kevin Richardson will handle the mike on Ch. 73.1 and OtterAthletics.com.

HAWK 3–DOT NOTES (0–6, 0–0 PWC): It's been a tough start to the 2016–17 season for the Hawks, especially on the defensive end where they're allowing 81.0 ppg…also are getting killed on the glass to the tune of a –13.0 rpg deficit…HNU is 0–4 vs. the CCAA, with losses to Dominguez Hills (71–72), East Bay (65–70), S.F. State (64–94) and Stanislaus (57–68)…The Master's College transfer Jason Webster (Jr./G) leads HNU in scoring (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.0 rpg).

WHEN LAST WE MET: These teams haven't met since the Otters opened the 2014–15 season by beating the Hawks 80–67 in Riverside on Nov. 14, 2014. Alex Fertig led four Otters in double figures with a game–high 22 points. Joshua Crum led HNU with 19 points.

WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: What looked like a cakewalk turned into a nail–biter as Dominican University erased a 16–point Otter lead in the second half before a late Jahvon Johnson jumper gave CSUMB a 73–72 win on Black Friday. Johnson led CSUMB with 16 points. Julien Ducree added 12 points and a game–high nine rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jonquis Bouyea pulled down a wild layup attempt from Reverend Maduakor with one second remaining. Bouyea escaped the scrum before Dominican could foul him.

NEW FEATURE: STATISTICALLY OVER… You'll notice a new feature in the CSUMB notebooks (and postgame recaps) called, The Game Was Statistically Over When…. This uses a formula created by famed sabermatician Bill James to calculate the precise second at which one team gained a lead which (statistically) could not be overcome.

THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The Otters hope to duplicate last season's Nov. 29th performance when they scored a season–high 93 points in a 93–67 win over Simon Fraser University in The Kep Bed. Ryan Nitz led a top–heavy Otter attack with 29 points. Alex Fertig chipped in 15 points while Patrick Lefiti passed five assists.

INTRODUCTIONS ARE IN ORDER: When the Otters and Hawks take the floor Tuesday night, introductions most certainly will be in order. Of the 26 players expected to suit up for the game, only HNU seniors Jamarae Ross and Dante Robinson have ever played in an Otters–Hawks matchup.  Moss scored eight points and Robinson scored three in CSUMB's 80–67 win in 2014.

SECOND HALF DOESN'T MAKE A WHOLE… Despite pulling out the 73–72 win over Dominican Friday night, for the first time in five outings, the Otters didn't win the second half. The Penguins out–scored the Otters 37–32 after intermission.

AND THE LITTLE ONES SHALL LEAD THEM: The youth movement is in full swing at CSUMB with freshmen and sophomore accounting for 73.1 percent of CSUMB's minutes played this season. Going one step further, freshmen alone have played 45.1 percent of Otter minutes through five games.

DOUBLE DOUBLE–DOUBLES: Gregg Polosky (14 and 14) and Julien Ducree (10 and 10) each posted double–doubles in the season opener vs. Concordia. It's the first time two Otters have posted double–doubles in a game since Derrick Anderson (12 and 10) and Kevin Loustale (14 and 11) turned the trick against UC San Diego on Feb. 17, 2012.

20 IS THE POINT: Shawn Smith broke the seal on 20–point games by leading all scorers with 20 points Nov. 18 at Notre Dame de Namur. He eclipsed his career high of 14 set in a win over South Carolina (Jan. 15, 2014) while playing at Texas A&M.

WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have usually been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters under Rob Bishop. The Nov. 12th 93–87 loss to Central Washington snapped a 7–game win streak when the Otters scored 80+ in regulation. CSUMB is 30–5 (.857) all–time under Bishop when scoring at least 80 in regulation.

60 SHALL BE THE NUMBER, NO LESS: With apologies to Monty Python, the number for the Otters shall be 60, not three. Following CSUMB's 66–59 loss at Cal Poly Pomona last season, the Otters are now 0–44 when scoring fewer than 60 points against NCAA Division II opponents dating back to the 2004–05 season, their first at the NCAA Division II level. The last time the Otters scored fewer than 60 points and beat a Division II foe was a 54–53 decision over Cal Poly Pomona in The Kelp Bed on Jan. 29, 2005.

The last time the Otters scored fewer than 60 points and beat any foe was (drum roll please), their 50–47 win over Cal Poly on Nov. 18, 2010.
