SEASIDE, Calif. — After the traditional turkey dinner Thanksgiving Day, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team will look to feast on a different bird Friday when the Penguins of Dominican University visit The Kelp Bed for a Black Friday (Nov. 25) game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Note that admission will be free for all fans. Parking will still be enforce and can be purchased online in advance at
www.CSUMB.edu/parking.
CSUMB (1-3) will be playing its next-to-last conference tune-up. The Otters also will host Holy Names University Tuesday (Nov. 29) before welcoming East Bay and San Bernardino (Dec. 2-3) to open CCAA play.
Rob Ponce and Alex Hudson will call Friday's game live on KION 101.1 FM. Kevin Richardson will have the call on Ch. 73 and OtterAthletics.com.
PENGUIN 3–DOT NOTES (1–3, 0–0 PWC): Dominican rallied from 11 points down midway through the second half Wednesday at Humboldt State only to lose on a 3–pointer with two seconds remaining, 87–84…Jeremiah Gray leads the Penguin offense at 18.5 ppg and shoots 47 pct. from beyond the arc…he is also the team's top rebounder at 5.0 rpg.
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Otters couldn't sustain a strong first half as Domincan rallied for an 83–73 win last season in San Rafael. The Penguins erased a 33–28 CSUMB halftime lead with a 55–point second half en route to the win.
Evan Zeller led three Otters in double figures with 19 points. Josh Ramirez led five Penguins in doubles with 20.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: Point Loma used a 26–9 rebounding edge to build a 43–27 lead then parried a few Otters thrusts in the second half to win 76–61 in San Diego on Nov. 19. Freshman
Kevin Warren came off the bench to lead the Otters with 22 points.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Kevin Warren's layup rolled off the rim and PLU's Zach Burnham grabbed the rebound with the Sea Lions leading 73–61 and 1:02 remaining.
NEW FEATURE: STATISTICALLY OVER… You'll notice a new feature in the CSUMB notebooks (and postgame recaps) called,
The Game Was Statistically Over When…. This uses a formula created by famed sabermatician Bill James to calculate the precise second at which one team gained a lead which (statistically) could not be overcome.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The Otters posted their biggest win ever (over a school not named Life Bible) when they defeated Southwestern College 106–53 on Nov. 25, 2005. Devoughn Lamont led the offense with 16 points while Steve Becker passed 10 assists.
SECOND HALF DOESN'T MAKE A WHOLE… The Otters didn't win the game, but for the fourth time in four outings, the Otters did win the second half Saturday night in San Diego. They are out–scoring their opponents 160–143 in the second half of games this season.
THE KING OF DENIAL: Gregg Polosky was up to his old tricks again Saturday at Point Loma, blocking six Sea Lions shots to tie his own CSUMB record. He also blocked six shots against Saint Martin's on Nov. 21, 2015. Andy Cannon was the first Otter to record six blocks (Jan. 22, 2002).
DOUBLE DOUBLE–DOUBLES: Gregg Polosky (14 and 14) and
Julien Ducree (10 and 10) each posted double–doubles in the season opener vs. Concordia. It's the first time two Otters have posted double–doubles in a game since Derrick Anderson (12 and 10) and Kevin Loustale (14 and 11) turned the trick against UC San Diego on Feb. 17, 2012.
20 IS THE POINT: Shawn Smith broke the seal on 20–point games by leading all scorers with 20 points Wednesday night at Notre Dame de Namur. He eclipsed his career high of 14 set in a win over South Carolina (Jan. 15, 2014) while playing at Texas A&M.
WE LOVE THE 80s: The 80s have usually been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters under
Rob Bishop. The Nov. 12th 93–87 loss to Central Washington snapped a 7–game win streak when the Otters scored 80+ in regulation. CSUMB is 30–5 (.857) all–time under Bishop when scoring at least 80 in regulation.
60 SHALL BE THE NUMBER, NO LESS: With apologies to Monty Python, the number for the Otters shall be 60, not three. Following CSUMB's 66–59 loss at Cal Poly Pomona last season, the Otters are now 0–44 when scoring fewer than 60 points against NCAA Division II opponents dating back to the 2004–05 season, their first at the NCAA Division II level. The last time the Otters scored fewer than 60 points and beat a Division II foe was a 54–53 decision over Cal Poly Pomona in The Kelp Bed on Jan. 29, 2005.
The last time the Otters scored fewer than 60 points and beat any foe was (drum roll please), their 50–47 win over Cal Poly on Nov. 18, 2010.
GO OTTERS!
