SEASIDE, Calif.-- It did not take long for the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team to jump ahead in the series opening game against Cal State Dominguez Hills, plating three runs in the first inning. The Otters never looked back on their way to a 13–3 win on Friday evening at the Otters Sports Complex.
Monterey Bay starting pitcher
Cody Gappa (Corning, Calif. / Red Bluff HS) pitched wonderfully, allowing the Otter offense to do their thing. Through seven innings pitched, Gappa (5–4) scattered five hits, allowing one run while fanning three Toros.
CSUMB got a two–RBI double from
Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif. / St. Francis HS) to plate two of its three runs in the opening inning. The Otters jumped on the Toro pitching in the middle innings with two runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, and four runs in the sixth inning to stake a 12–1 lead.
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) singled in a run in the fourth as part of his 1–for–4 day at the plate. In the fifth, the Otters got two runs by way of a wild pitch, while the third run came on a sacrifice fly by Gomez for his third RBI of the game.
Brian Hamm (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley HS) and
Justin Flores (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis West HS) each collected RBI singles in the sixth inning, with Hamm coming in on the fifth wild pitch by CSUDH pitching. Gomez recorded his fourth RBI in the sixth inning as well with an RBI single to right field to drive in Flores.
Colby Sims (Jacksonville, Fla. / Mandarin HS) came in on relief of Gappa and allowed two runs on five hits in two innings of work.
In addition to Gomez's four RBIs and two runs scored, Hamm collected two RBI and scored three times in the win. Flores also came around to score three times. Three different Toros recorded RBIs in the loss, while Fernando Gallegos and Brady Conlan each had two–hit days at the plate.
Monterey Bay and CSUDH will face off in doubleheader action on Saturday beginning at noon at the Otter Sports Complex.
