SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team capped its best tournament of the season with a third place finish at the 2015 Otter Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Blackhorse Golf Course.
CSUMB, which recorded the low round of the tournament with a 301 Monday, came back to the pack a bit Tuesday, but still managed a 326, its eighth best round of the season, to earn its best team results since finishing second at the 2014 edition of the Otter Invite.
"It was a great tournament for us," said CSUMB Coach
Darcy Milligan. "I know the players are disappointed that they couldn't hold on to their first round lead, but we're very young and learning how to finish is part of the growing process. We're going to be a better team with the experience we gained this week."
Nova Southeastern took the team title at 607, completing a sweep of the 2014–15 Otter Invitationals for NSU. The Sharks captured the men's title at their tournament in October.
Individually, senior
Arielle Swan-Smith (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) and sophomore
Katrina Mendez (Salinas/Trinity Christian HS) each carded 80s for CSUMB's low rounds Tuesday. Swan-Smith's score helped her net a fourth place finish, the second best by an Otter this season. She finished three back of medalist Mailen Domec Chantry of NSU, who went 4–over 148 for the tournament.
Freshman
Brianna Areia (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) finished the tournament at 156 to tie for 11th place, CSUMB's third best of the season and the best by anybody other than Swan-Smith. Freshman
Blake Haverty (Martinez/Carondelet HS) and Mendez both placed in the top 25 at 160.
Dallas Baptist finished second overall on the team leaderboard at 617, with the Otters and Academy of Art 10 stokes back of DBU. Linda Brown of Cal State East Bay won a card off versus Sydney Williams of DBU (lower final round score) to earn the runner–up trophy.
The Otters will take 10 days off before returning to competition in Goodyear, Ariz. for the Mustang Intercollegiate Apr. 3–4.
GO OTTERS!
