AUSTIN, Calif. — Tough weather conditions did little to help scoring averages, but the Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team improved by 20 strokes in round two to earn a ninth place finish at the St. Edward's Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Onion Creek Club.
Harsh conditions played havoc with the schedule, turning Sunday's practice round into round one before wiping out play altogether on Monday. Temperatures in the high 30s and moderate winds remained Tuesday, but allowed the teams to complete the final round.
"We all played much better today," said CSUMB Head Coach
Darcy Milligan. "It was tough on us not being able to see the course before starting round one, but we were able to regroup and finish strong given the conditions. I'm proud of the way we were able to hang in there and not give up."
Senior
Arielle Swan-Smith (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) carded a 76 Tuesday, CSUMB's low round of the tournament, to earn a share of 23rd place at 159. Freshman
Keila Takeuchi (Fresno/Clovis West) also grabbed a spot in the top half of the 64-golfer field as her matching 82s put her in a tie for 30th at 164.
All five CSUMB players improved on the first round scores Tuesday. Joining Swan-Smith and Takeuchi on the team scoresheet were
Katrina Mendez (Salinas/Trinity Christian) with an 83 and
Blake Haverty (Martinez/Carondelet HS) with an 88.
The University of Indianapolis was the only school to break 200 in the tournament, shooting 295 Tuesday to win the team title at 606. Glory Jangthongsiri of West Texas A&M finished the event at 2-over 142 to earn medalist honors.
The Otters will jump right back into action next week, returning to California to take part in the Pioneer Shootout Mar. 2-3 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo.
