SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team will welcome CCAA contenders Humboldt State and Cal State San Bernardino to The Kelp Bed this weekend as Otter fans prepare to say farewell to a pair of crowd favorites. The Otters host No. 19 Humboldt Friday evening before reuniting with former Head Coach Renee Jimemez and her Coyotes Saturday.
Saturday's game will be Senior Night, when Otter guards
Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS) and
Nikki Beckman (Dublin HS/Ohlone College) will take The Kelp Bed floor for the final time in their Otter uniforms.
Tipoff both nights will be at 5:30 p.m. as the opening games of men's/women's doubleheader action. As always, live audio, video and stats will be available at www.OtterAthletics.com. Visit
Gameday Central for the appropriate links.
LUMBERJACK 3–DOT NOTES (20–3, 16–2 CCAA): The Lumberjacks enter the weekend as the CCAA's lone nationally ranked team (23rd WBCA, 19th D2SIDA). Nevertheless, they're in a dogfight with Cal State Dominguez Hills (tied) and Cal Poly Pomona (one game back) for the CCAA title…though in the middle of the pack defensively, HSU ranks No. 2 offensively in CCAA scoring (73.1 ppg)…feature a balanced lineup with their top three scorers averaging between 11.6 and 12.6 ppg…Jr./F A'Jaeee Foster leads the team at 12.6 ppg and ranks No. 3 in the CCAA in rebounding (9.3 rpg).
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Otters opened the game shooting 1–for–14 from the floor, and that spelled doom in a 76–55 loss in Lumberjack Arena on Jan. 17. The Otters got 10 points apiece from
Jenna Bandy and
Kaila Turner. Jae Shin made 4–of–4 3–pointers as part of a game–high 20 points for the Lumberjacks.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: The Otters made one of the biggest comebacks in school history, rallying from an 18–point deficit to upend Cal State L.A. 64–60 in The Eagles Nest. After the Otters finally caught L.A. midway through the second half, the teams traded leads six times down the stretch until a
Jenna Bandy 3–point play put them ahead to stay, 60–58, with 1:35 to play.
McKenna Hill scored a career–high 21 points and Bandy added 19 to lead the Otters.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The last time the Otters played on a Feb. 20 they used the date to clinch their first ever CCAA Tournament berth with a 68–57 win over UC San Diego on Feb. 20, 2010.
RED–HOT HILL: Sophomore forward
McKenna Hill continued the hottest run of her young career by scoring a career–high 21 points last Saturday at Cal State L.A. She is averaging 13.0 points per game over her last eight games, bringing her season average to 10.3 ppg.
GO (DOUBLE) FIGURE: With
McKenna Hill up to 10.3 points per game for the season, the Otters now have two players (
Jenna Bandy, 13.6 ppg) averaging in double figures for the season. Should they both finish there, it will be the first time an Otter duo has turned that trick since Dana Andrews (14.8) and Helen Suarez (14.3) did it for the 2008–09 season.
JAZMINE FROM THE BLOCK: After setting a personal record with four blocks in the Feb. 6 win over San Francisco State (now No. 5 in MB history),
Jazmine Johnson exploded for a school–record six blocks the following night in the win over Sonoma State. Julie Heurung (with five blocks on three separate occasions) owned the old record. With 33 blocks on the season, she sits at No. 3 on that list. Only Heurung, who set the CSUMB record with 39 in 2011 and posted 38 in 2010, stands in front of her. She currently ranks No. 2 in the CCAA at 1.6 bpg.
BANDY'S ONE POINT AWAY: Jenna Bandy became the sixth player in Otter history to surpass 600 career points last week. She enters Friday's game versus Humboldt State needing one more to catch Helen Suarez (616) for No. 5 on the list. She has a good chance to catch former teammate Brittani Jefferson (627) for the No. 4 spot as well.
ONE MORE HIGH FIVE FOR BANDY: Jenna Bandy enters the week ranked No. 7 on the CSUMB single season scoring list with 312 points. She needs eight points to catch Alma Lopez (320 in 2008) for No. 6, 16 to catch Veronica Williams (328 in 2010) and 21 to catch Brittani Jefferson (333 in 2013).
OTTERS AMONG THE CCAA LEADERS: The following Otters enter tonight's action ranked among the CCAA leaders: SCORING: No. 8
Jenna Bandy (13.6 ppg); FG%: No. 7
Jazmine Johnson (.517); FT%: No. 2
Jenna Bandy (.913); REBOUNDS: No. 8
Jazmine Johnson (7.0 rpg); STEALS: No. 4
Jenna Bandy (1.8 spg); BLOCKS: No. 3
Jazmine Johnson (1.4 bpg).
WORKING OVERTIME: With their 63–59 overtime win versus Stanislaus, the Otters improved to 5–3 in overtime games at the NCAA level. It was CSUMB's first overtime win since defeating Sonoma State 64–59 (1 ot) on Dec. 3, 2011. CSUMB has played only two Division II seasons (2006 & 2012) without playing at least one overtime game.
70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. With the 84–80 win at San Francisco State on Jan. 3, CSUMB is now 35–2 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Prior to the 2013 regular season finale (an 84–75 overtime loss to Chico State), the Otters hadn't scored 70 in defeat since a 85–79 loss to Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 6, 2008.
GO OTTERS!
