SEASIDE, Calif.. -- In the second series of 2015, the Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball team welcomed Western Oregon University to town for a, 4–game set. Game one featured eight runs in a quick time of two hours and nine minutes, ending with a CSUMB 6–2 win on Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 6, WESTERN OREGON 2 -- BOX SCOREAfter making his collegiate debut last weekend in a relief appearance against Azusa Pacific, freshman
Greg Steinbeck (Hollister/San Benito HS) made his first collegiate start Friday afternoon against WOU. Steinbeck was equally as good in this game, throwing six shutout innings before allowing a two–run home run in the seventh inning. He allowed four hits and struck out three in his second win of the season.
The six scoreless innings was enough from Steinbeck (2–0), as the Otters went on top early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After singling to open the bottom of the first inning,
Will Rosado (Clovis/Clovis East HS) made a statement by hitting a big fly in his second at bat, tacking on one more run for the Otters in the second inning. CSUMB added to its four–run lead with one run in the fifth and sixth inning, leading 6–0 heading into the seventh.
While Steinbeck made it through the seventh inning, it was the top of the ninth where things got dicey for the Otters. Reliever
Brian Scott (Campbell/Westmont HS) loaded the bases by way of a single and two bean balls. Enter
Christian Stubbs (Mission Viejo/San Joan Hills HS) who was able to get Garret Harpole to line the ball right at second baseman
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks/North Monterey County HS) who then flipped the ball to
Brian Bostjancic (Forest Knolls/Sir Francis Drake HS) who was covering second and doubled off the runner to end the game and give CSUMB the 6–2 win.
Offensively, four different Otters recorded two hits in the win, including Rosado. CSUMB moves to 2–3 on the season.
Cal State Monterey Bay will be back in action tomorrow for doubleheader action against Western Oregon. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
