SAN DIEGO — One night after throwing a scare into No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team had a black cat cross its collective path Halloween night as host UC San Diego earned a 25–13, 25–15, 25–23 win in RIMAC Arena.
UCSD closed the first set with a 22–6 run to effectively take control of the match. The Otters finally found their footing midway through the third set, eventually forging a 22–20 lead, before the Tritons scored five of the final six points to seal the win.
Senior libero
Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) provided the statistical highlight of the evening, gathering a match–high 21 digs, the No. 9 mark for a 3–set match in Otter history. Offensively
Jessica Malcolm's eight kills led the way, snapping a streak of 15 consecutive matches in which an Otter posted double–digit kills.
CSUMB will close its 4–match roadtrip—and the away portion of its 2015 schedule—with contests at Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State next weekend. The Otters return home to host Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
