Upset Bid Falls Short As No. 20 Sonoma Wins 3–2

Goals by Greenwod, Porteous give Otter lead but Seawolves score twice late

BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — For the first 58 minutes of Friday's Cal State Monterey Bay's women's soccer match at Sonoma State, you could be mistaken for having thought that the Otters were the nationally–ranked team and Sonoma was the upstart trying to match its best–ever 6–game opening to a season.

But the Seawolves eventually proved their mettle, rallying for two goals in the final 32 minutes to post a come–from–behind 3–2 win at Seawolf Field in the California Collegiate Athletic Association opener for both teams.

"We were very good today. Our attack was strong and possession was quick," said CSUMB Head Coach Erin Reinke. "We had a variety of players being dangerous in the final third. We need to fine tune our defensive play in the 18 yard box though. We have definitely made positive strides so far this season. We look forward to our Sunday's game against Stanislaus."

CSUMB (3–3–0) titled the field heavily in its favor in the first half and created a golden opportunity to score just past the half hour mark. Pressure in the Seawolf box gave Michelle Garrone (Petaluma HS) a great look, but a Sonoma defender picked her header off the line on 32 minutes.

Sonoma (8–0–0) added to Otter misfortunes less than five minutes later when Margi Osmundson's right to left cross found Melissa Lafranchi unattended in the penalty area and CSUMB found itself shockingly behind 1–0.

The Otters continued to press the attack and were rewarded for their pluck two minute before halftime when a pair of freshmen combined for their first collegiate points. Midfielder Mariya Fefilova (Turlock HS) forced Sonoma goalkeeper Allison Hadidian to make a save from inside the box. But Hadidian couldn't secure the rebound and Taylor Greenwood (Norco HS) buried her first goal to send the teams to the half tied at 1–1.

Smelling blood in the water, the Otters created and finished their first scoring chance of the second half just 10 minutes after the restart. This time, Kristen Womack (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) got free down the left side on a partial breakaway. Her effort from the top of the box caromed off the right post, but Regan Porteous (Lodi/St. Mary's HS) pounced on the second chance to notch her team leading third goal of the season.

As if the second Otter goal was a packet of smelling salts, Sonoma quickly came alive and took control of the match for the first time. Barely three minutes after CSUMB took the lead, Lauren Curtin tallied her seventh goal of the season for the Seawolves when her cross attempt from the left wing crossed up everybody and found its way unmolested through the Otter penalty area and in to tie the match at 2–2.

With the Seawolves now on the attack, they registered the next six shots, including a beautiful, curling 25–yarder from Sara Van Wagoner that found the left side net and put Sonoma back on top 3–2 with 17 minutes to play.

The Otters managed two more shots on target in the final nine minutes, but neither troubled Hadidian much as the Seawolves held on for the win.
CSUMB jumps from the frying pan into the fire when it returns home Sunday to host No. 3 Cal State Stanislaus (7–0–0) at the Otter Sports Complex.
