No. 3 CSUMB Advances To NCAA Championship

Hortt paces Otters with a 5-over 221 to finish tied for eighth

AUSTIN –
The No. 3 Cal State Monterey Bay men's golf team punched its ticket to the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship appearance Wednesday afternoon with a fourth place finish at the West/South Central Regional. The Otters (388-302-307) finished the 54-hole championship at 33-over 897, six strokes ahead of fifth place Western New Mexico and seven ahead of sixth place Simon Frasier.
 
CSUMB – one of six squads in the 20-team field at Gray Rock Golf Club to earn a berth to the 20-team national championship. – will begin its title run at the NCAA Championship at the Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich. on May 19.
 
"Today wasn't pretty but we got the job done," said Head Coach Jason Owen. "The Super Regional is the most nerve racking tournament of the year and it is over, we are heading to another National Championship."
 
Junior Brandon Hortt (San Diego/SDSU) led the Otters in a tie for eighth at 5-over 221. Sophomores Anton Rosen (Stockholm, Sweden) and Ray Richards (Tualatin, Ore.) finished at 224 and tied for 17th place. 
 
Senior Dylan Jackson (San Diego/La Jolla HS) finished tied for 37th at 228 while sophomore Carr Vernon (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) tied for 50th at 230.
 
Competing as an individual, Midwestern State's Derek Oland was the medalist at 4-under 212.
