Brandon Hortt ended his junior season with his best round of the week.
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's golf team finished the season in a tie for fifth place in the NCAA match-play quarterfinals, Thursday, after falling in a closely contested match-play duel with top-ranked Barry, 3-2, at The Meadows par-71, 7,034 course on the campus of Grand Valley State.
"This was a tough way to go out," said Head Coach
Jason Owen. "If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change anything except I would have one more putt go in. We gave ourselves a chance and that is what you want.
"This has been a great team to work with and I can't wait to start this fall."
Junior
Brandon Hortt (San Diego/SDSU) played a solid round of golf, firing a 73 to win by eight over Scott Smyers and score CSUMB's first point.
Mario Beltran of Barry held off a late charge from sophomore
Anton Rosen (Stockholm, Sweden) in match 2, giving Barry their first point.
Fellow sophomore
Carr Vernon (Poplar Bluff, Mo.) went back and forth with Berry Jole and entered the 18th down by one shot. After a bogey by Jole, Vernon had a putt to tie the match and virtually send the Otters to the semifinals. The putt went halfway in the hole, but lipped out giving Barry their second point.
Senior
Dylan Jackson (San Diego/La Jolla HS) followed with a two shot victory over Jared Dalga. Jackson was down two after the front nine, but played a bogey-free back nine in his final collegiate appearance. Jackson finishes with a career match-play record of 4-1.
In the final match between the two teams, sophomore
Ray Richards (Tualatin, Ore.) fell to the top ranked player in the nation, Adam Svensson, to seal the match for Barry.
Barry will take on CSUMB's fellow CCAA member Chico State in the semifinals this afternoon.
