and the clutch hitting of junior shortstop
Trina Solario (Manteca/San Joaquin Delta College) to earn a 2–1, 8–0 (5 inn.) sweep of Cal State East Bay to open a 4–game series Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.
Solario played the hero in the opener, driving a 1–out double to deep center field in the seventh inning to give the Otters the walk–off win. Her next at bat was a bases loaded double that capped a 5–run first inning in Game 2, propelling CSUMB to the sweep.
Despite Solario's heroics, the day belonged the to Otter pitchers.
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) followed her 1–hit shutout over Academy of Art Wednesday with a 2–hitter Friday afternoon. As she did against ArtU, she allowed only two balls to leave the infield, though one was a sixth–inning home run by Lauren Vestal that temporarily pulled the Pioneers even at 1–1.
Reinhardt, who took a no–hitter into the seventh against ArtU, took one into the sixth against East Bay, when Vestal's blast was the first ball to leave the infield. Reinhardt shut the door after that and finished with seven strikeouts while earning her fifth win.
Sophomore
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Bullard HS) was even more dominant in the nightcap. She twirled the second 1–hitter of her career, facing the minimum thanks to catcher
Nicole Pires (Ontario/Colony HS) throwing out pinch runner Mandy Dale trying to steal to erase the only base runners the Pioneers manufactured.
Clarkson struck out the side in the first inning before the Otter offense exploded in the bottom of the frame.
Madison Casto Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) doubled home the first two runs in front of Solario's bases–clearing double in the 5–run first.
Reinhardt chased Pioneer starter Kelsey Cairns with a 2–run homer, her first of the season, in the second inning. Casto's 2–out single in the fourth inning scored
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) to bring the run rule into effect.
Clarkson sent East Bay home quietly with a pair of ground outs and her fourth strikeout to seal the win.
Solario finished the day 3–for–5 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs to lead the Otter offense. She was the only Otter to hit safely in both games.
CSUMB (13–4, 7–3 CCAA) concludes its 4–game series with East Bay (6–12, 5–9) with a Saturday doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
