SEASIDE, Calif. -- Sophomore pitcher Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) dominated in the circle and the bats produced 18 runs to lead the No. 14 Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to an 8–6, 10–0 (5 inn.) sweep of Pace University Thursday at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB runs its record to 22–5 with the victories, its best–ever record through 27 games.

Clarkson improved to 11–2 overall by earning wins in both ends of the doubleheader. She came on in relief in Game 1, fanning five in 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. She started Game 2 and tossed a 4–hit shutout, fanning five more in the 5–inning win.

After Pace took what would prove to be its only lead of the day on Jeane Drury's RBI single in the top of the first inning, the Otters jumped on the Setters by manufacturing six runs—their biggest first inning of the season—on just four hits. But Pace wouldn't go away, pulling to within 8–6 in the fifth innings thanks to a 2–run home run by Nikole Larm and an RBI double from Natalie Gellos.

That's when Clarkson shut the door. She fanned Samantha Garcia to end the fifth–inning rally as part of three consecutive strikeouts that took the wind out of the Setters' sails.

The nightcap produced no such drama as the Otters posted consecutive 4–run innings in the third and fourth to bring the run rule into effect. Bianca Noriega's (Ventura/Camarillo HS) second homer of the season, a 2–run shot, made it 8–0 Otters before Alissa Greenhaw (Galt/Cosumnes River College) hit her first collegiate homer, another 2–run shot, to ice the game.

That turned out to be way more support than Clarkson needed as she allowed just four hits, two of them infield jobs, to earn her CCAA–leading fifth shutout of the season.

Trina Solario (Manteca/San Joaquin Delta College) and Courtney Varela (Harbor City/Torrance HS) led the Otters with four hits. Solario's afternoon included a 3–for–3 effort in the nightcap while Varela recorded her first collegiate double in the opener.

Noriega added a pair of doubles to her home run while Danica Arterburn (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) chipped in three hits with a double and five RBIs.

CSUMB takes a well deserved weekend off after winning its fourth game in a row and 14th in its last 15 outings. The Otters return to action by hosting a 4–game series with San Francisco State Mar. 28–29 at the Otter Sports Complex.
