SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team continued to roll in impressive fashion Monday afternoon, running its winning streak to a season–best nine games with a 6–0, 9–0 sweep of West Region rival Holy Names University at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB improved to 17–4 overall, its second best start ever and its best since the 2012 CCAA Champion Otters opened 18–4. Its 9–game winning streak, meanwhile, is the second best in school history, trailing only the 10–game streak put together from Feb. 17 through Mar. 3, 2012.
While the Otters produced an ample supply of offense Monday, collecting 15 runs and 23 hits in 11 innings, pitching again dominated the story. Junior
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) allowed just two hits in six shutout innings to win the opener. She has given up just one run and nine hits in her last 27 2/3 innings, a streak that includes a pair of 2–hitters and a 1–hitter.
Reinhardt didn't get credit for the shutout because
Danica Arterburn (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) came in to pitch a hitless seventh inning.
The nightcap saw an even more dominating performance from sophomore
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS), who needed just five innings to strikeout a career–high 12 batters in her third consecutive shutout and fourth in her last five starts.
As a staff, the Otters have not allowed a run in their last 32 2/3 innings and have allowed just three runs in their last 59 2/3 innings (0.35 ERA). For good measure, they've fanned 54 batters over that stretch.
Thanks to the Otter arms, Monday's games created little in the way of drama. CSUMB manufactured the only runs it would need in the first inning of the opener when
Courtney Varela (Harbor City/Torrance HS) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and came around to score on a throwing error following a
Brianne Hollon (Agoura Hills/Alemany HS) single. Hollon also scored on the play.
A pair of RBI singles from
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) and one from
Trina Solario (Manteca/San Joaquin Delta College) capped the scoring.
Game 2 saw the Otters open their ledger in the first inning once again when
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) singled Varela home with two outs. A Noriega RBI double highlighted a 3–run Otter third that brought the CSUMB advantage to 4–0. Noriega and
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) added 2–run doubles in a 5–run fourth inning that brought the run rule into effect.
Hollon led the offense by finishing the doubleheader 6–for–6 with five runs and two stolen bases. Noriega went 4–for–5 with 2 runs, 5 RBIs and a pair of doubles.
Alissa Greenhaw (Galt/Cosumnes River College) went 2–for–3 in the opener while Varela went 3–for–3 with 3 runs and her 11th stolen base of the season in the nightcap.
CSUMB hits the road this weekend when it returns to CCAA action at Cal State Stanislaus. The 4–game set begins with a doubleheader Friday at 1 p.m. The Otters return home to host Pace University from Long Island, N.Y on Thursday, Mar. 20.
GO OTTERS!
