CSUMB Drops Twinbill To Western Oregon

Sophomore Matt Urakami stole two bases in Monday's doubleheader.

Otters fall 7-5 and 7-1 to visiting Wolves

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 14 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped its first series since 2012, falling 7-5 and 7-1 in Monday's doubleheader to visiting Western Oregon.
 
Junior Brian Hamm (Pleasanton/Chabot College) led CSUMB's offense in the twinbill, going 4-for-6 with two doubles.  Sophomore Matt Urakami (San Jose/Branham HS) was also solid at the plate with three hits including a double while stealing a pair of bases.
 
The Otters (1-3) return to the field for their final non-conference homestand on Friday, Feb. 6, hosting Point Loma Nazarene at 2 p.m.

GAME 1: WOU 7, CSUMB 5 
CSUMB saw its 5-1 lead after four innings slip away as WOU posted three runs in the fifth followed by a run int he seventh and a pair in eighth. 

Hamm hit a leadoff double down the left line in the first inning and crossed the plate on senior Kaden Kamoe's double to right center.  After stealing third, Kamoe scored on a WOU error to give CSUMB a 2-0 lead in the first. 
 
Otters doubled their runs in the second after WOU .  With one out, senior Cannon Bernarding drew a walk and Urakami followed with a double.  Hamm's second double pushed Bernarding across and Ty Morris' (Royal Oaks/North Monterey County HS) sent a ball deep center for a sacrifice fly to score Urakami. 
 
CSUMB's final run came in the fourth, taking advantage of two WOU errors.  

The Wolves scored three runs in the fifth on three hits on a 2 RBI double by Daniel McNabb and Matt Taylor's single.  

After knotting the game at 5-5 in the fifth, WOU drove in the game winning runs on a McNabb's second 2 RBI double of the game.

Senior Rickey Guerrero (Stockton/MPC) took the loss despite the final two runs being unearned.  WOU's Zach Kayser earned the win after one inning of action and Kody Stone collected the save.

GAME 2: WOU 7, CSUMB 1
The Otters registered six hits but were only able to push a single run across, stranding nine runners as Western Oregon collected the series win. 
 
The Wolves posted two-run innings in the second and third innings before putting away the game with a three-run fifth. 
 
The Otters lone run came in their final at-bat.  Sophomore Devin Finn hit a leadoff double off the right center wall and scored on Bernarding's infield groundout. 
 
CSUMB starter Brian Scott (Campbell/West Valley College) struckout two batters and relinguished two earned runs for the loss. WOU's Clark McKitrick nabbed his first win after 4.1 shutout innings.
