Otters Bring The Brooms For 3rd Time In 4 Matches

CSUMB earns 3rd sweep in 8 days by defeating San Francisco State

SEASIDE, Calif. — For just the second time in program history and the first time since 2011, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team brought out the brooms for its third sweep in four matches, putting the bite on visiting San Francisco State for a 25–18, 25–23, 25–21 win Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (4–9, 4–5 CCAA) swept Cal State East Bay Oct. 1 and Cal State Dominguez Hills Sept. 27 as part of the O'Cedar trifecta. It's the first time since CSUMB opened the 2011 season by sweeping Notre Dame de Namur, Williams Jessup University and Dominguez Hills that the Otters packed three sweeps into a 4–match span.

For those of you keeping score at home, the record for the shortest span in which the Otters have registered four sweeps, is 14 matches set in both 2011 and 2012. The CSUMB record for sweeps in a single season is five set four times previously, last in 2013.

Although it was a sweep, the Otters had to grind for Saturday's win. The Gators led as late as 14–13 in Set 1 and 13–12 in Set 2. The Otters never trailed in Set 3 after a Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) kill made it 4–3, but it was still a 2–point game as late as 21–19 before kills by Ashen and Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) removed the last vestige of doubt from the outcome.

Janai Johnson (Sacramento/Bradshaw Christian) continued her hot attacking streak by leading the Otters with 10 kills and a .348 attack percentage. She also chipped in a match–high four blocks. Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) led three Otter defenders in double figures with 19 digs. Leana Moleta (Palmdale/Paraclete HS) ran the offense with 31 assists.

CSUMB hits the road for its next four matches, beginning Oct. 10 at nationally–ranked UC San Diego. The Otters return home to host Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus Oct. 24–25.
