Three Tight Sets Go Against Otters at UC San Diego

CSUMB close late in all three, but Tritons win 25–21, 25–20, 25–23

LA JOLLA, Calif. — It fought tooth–and–nail to the bitter end, but the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team couldn't pull off the upset, falling late in all three sets at UC San Diego, 25–21, 25–20, 25–23 Friday night in RIMAC Arena.

All three set scores found their way to 21–19, with the Otters leading there in the first set and trailing in the next two, but all three times UCSD found a way to close out the win en route to the sweep.

"Check out the stats; we did the work," said CSUMB Head Coach Jody Garry (@JodyGarry). "Skyler (Allen) did a nice job and we passed as well as we have all season."

Senior outside hitter Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) led the offense with a match–high 12 kills. Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) added 24 digs, with 21 of those coming in the first two sets alone. Skyler Allen (Riverside Poly) came off the bench to add six kills and two blocks playing on the right.

CSUMB trailed 16–9 in Set 1 before reeling off an 11–1 run to take the lead at 20–17. The Tritons responded with a run of their own, however, closing the set by scoring eight of the final nine points.

Neither team was able to put together a big run in the final two sets. The second set featured seven ties and seven lead changes before UCSD broke a 17–17 tie with three consecutive points to take control. The Tritons never led by more than three points down the stretch in Set 3, but the Otters never got over the hump either. With UCSD up 22–20, the teams traded side outs for the final six points, allow the Tritons to hold on for the win.

CSUMB continues its 4–match roadtrip Saturday when it head north from San Diego to take on Cal Poly Pomona in Kellogg Gym.
