Otters Drop Another Heart-Breaker At Cal Poly

CSUMB leads late in all four sets but falls 25-21, 20-25, 26-24, 25-22

POMONA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team continues not to reap the rewards of a solid run of play after dropping a hard–fought 25–21, 20–25, 26–24, 25–22 decision to Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night in Kellogg Gym.

CSUMB got season–highs of 18 kills from Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) and 10 kills from Victoria Clardy (Westminster/Marina HS). Freshman Whitney Hirst (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) saw her first extended action at setter and passed for 34 assists.

But none of that was enough to stop the Broncos in this one as they rallied from behind in all three of their set wins to pull out the match. The Otters led at the 19-point mark in all four sets, including leads of 21–19 in the first set and 23–21 in the third.

In addition to Ashen and Clardy leading the offense, Janai Johnson (Sacramento/Bradshaw Christian) and Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) led a strong defensive effort. Johnson did her damage at the net with five blocks while Cookus anchored the backline with 28 digs.

CSUMB continues its current 4–match roadtrip next week with matches at Cal State San Bernardino Thursday and at Humboldt State Saturday. The Otters return to The Kelp Bed to host Chico State Friday, Oct. 24.
