Another Close One Goes Against Otters at San Bern

Otters drop two deuce sets in 28-26, 25-23, 25-19 loss to No. 14 Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A signature win for the Cal State Monterey Bay continues to feel so close but to remain just too far away. Thursday night, the Otters dropped two agonizing deuce games to open the match in a 28–26, 25–23, 25–19 win by No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino in Coussoulis Arena.

Looking for its first ever win over San Bernardino, the Otters rallied from 24–22 down to earn two set points in the opener before the Coyotes scored the final three points to take an early lead. Set 2 saw the Otters grab an early lead and hold it until San Bernardino scored the final four points to come from behind again and take a 2–0 lead into Set 3.

The Coyotes started their rally in the final set a bit earlier, using a 10–1 run to turn CSUMB's 15–9 advantage into a 19–16 lead they'd hold for the remainder of the match.

Senior outside hitter Julia Ashen (North Salinas HS) led the Otters with 12 kills and, serving for the first time this season, recorded her first ace of 2014. Junior middle blocker Victoria Clardy (Westminster/Marina HS) chipped in six kills and a match–high five blocks.

In the back row, junior libero Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS) chipped in a match–high 26 digs. With 1,227 career digs, she moved to within 49 digs of Rheann Fall for the No. 4 spot in the Otter record book.

CSUMB concludes its 4–match roadtrip Saturday when it heads to the other end of the state to take on Humboldt State in Lumberjack Arena. The Otters return home to host Chico State Oct. 24.
