Arielle Swan-Smith (Sunnyvale/Cal St. East Bay) became the first Otter to go red this season, shooting a career–best 70 to finish second individually while leading Cal State Monterey Bay to a fifth place finish at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational Tuesday at Foxtail Golf Club.
Swan-Smith's 2–under 70 was the second best round of the tournament and one of only three rounds in the red in the entire 36–hole event. She finished second overall at 2–over 146.
As a team, the Otters moved up two places, slipping past Cal State East Bay and Academy of Art to finish fifth at 627, their best finish of the young season.
"We were able to correct some of our mistakes from yesterday and came out firing today," said CSUMB Head Coach
Darcy Milligan. "I'm extremely proud of the way Arielle played today. Hopefully this good round will give us some momentum going into Cal Poly this weekend."
In addition to Swan-Smith,
Katrina Mendez (Salinas/Trinity Christian) carded a 77 Tuesday, the best round this season by an Otter not named Swan-Smith.
Keila Takeuchi (Fresno/Clovis West) followed a Monday 79 with an 80.
Brianna Areia (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) closed Tuesday's scoring with an 82.
St. Edward's (Texas) University took the team title at 599. Western Washington (610), Chico State (613) and Sonoma State (618) completed the top five.
Individually, SEU's Haley Haught shot 68 Tuesday to hold off Swan-Smith's charge and capture medalist honors at even par 144. Dani O'Keefe of Chico State and first round leader Jenn Paul of Western Washington tied for third, two strokes back of Swan-Smith at 148.
CSUMB concludes the fall portion of its schedule Saturday and Sunday at the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Women's Invitational on the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
