Seaside, Calif --- The Otter Sports Complex was the host of a celebration for Cal State Monterey Bay's Homecoming on Sunday. However, a 3-0 defeat at the feet of #8 Cal Poly Pomona put a damper on the celebration.
The Otters (2-7-4, 1-5-2 CCAA) came into their match against the Broncos (14-0-1, 8-0-0 CCAA) fresh off a hard fought 0-0 draw against the UC San Diego Tritons. However, the Broncos showed early why they have yet to lose a game this season. Striking early in the opening minute, Kris Korich sent an entry pass from the left side of the box to Armando Ochoa, who sent it to the top left corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Adding to their lead, Korich sent another through ball in the 18th minute to Alexander Turkson, who blasted a shot over Otters goalie
Evan Drake (Sacramento, CA) for his sixth goal of the year. Immediately after, the Broncos got the ball back again, with Mathew Perez sending a through ball from 30 yards out to Christian Gonzalez Diaz, who deked Drake for his eighth goal of the season, putting the game at 3-0.
The Otters regained their focus from there, with
Duce Bell (Fresno, CA) coming close on two strikes in the 38th minute; with Broncos goalie Fernando Pablo Quevedo having to make a full extending save to stop the first shot. The Otters had many opportunities off of corner kicks, with four coming in the first half.
The second half saw much more pressing and attacking from both squads, with Pomona registering nine shots and CSUMB with five of their own.
Before the match, the Otters honored their seniors with a pre-game ceremony for them and their families. For
Michael Brixey (Truckee, CA),
George Plakorus (Columbia, MO),
Manny Cazares (Panorama City, CA),
Max Madrigal (Oxnard, CA),
Julian Salas (Long Beach, CA),
Jonathan Decker (Simi Valley, CA),
Anthony Velazquez (Gilroy, CA),
Wyatt Maysey (Atascadero, CA) and
Aaron Kochman (Boise, ID), it was a celebration of all the contributions they have made to further grow and expand the men's program at CSUMB.
Head Coach
Rob Cummings had nothing but praise when asked about his outgoing seniors, saying "By no means am I disappointed in them. They've always been professional, they've always done everything asked of them, and at the end of the day they are going to be successful in life. For me, I'm proud to have had them in my program, proud of their association with the university and look forward to seeing their future endeavors when they are successful."
The Otters look to rebound back from their performance with a trip to San Bernardino to face the Coyotes of CSU San Bernardino on Friday, October 24th at 3:00 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
