San Bernardino, Calif --- The Cal State Monterey Bay Men's Soccer team looked to play spoiler against Cal State San Bernardino, which came into the Friday's contest tied for fifth in the conference and tied for eighth in the first NCAA West Regional Rankings on Wednesday (Oct. 22). The Coyotes were able to take a 2-0 lead before the Otters came storming back late in the game to tie it at 2-2, sending the game into a sudden-death overtime. Unfortunately, CSUSB scored quickly in OT to hand the Otters to 3-2 loss in San Bernardino at Premier Field.
The Coyotes got on the board 30 minutes into the first half to take a 1-0 lead after Juan Carlos Gonzalez netted his sixth goal of the season from just inside the box. CSUMB made a worthy attempt on a goal when
George Plakorus (Columbia, Mo./Hickman HS) tried a header, but was saved by CSUSB goaltender Robert Gonzalez, to hold the score at 1-0.
The second half provided more action and excitement as a total of three goals were scored. First, the Coyotes took a 2-0 lead on Corey Christ's sixth goal of the season. Not having scored two goals in a game since a 2-1 win over San Francisco State on Oct. 3, the end seemed near for the Otters, however, in a matter of less than five minutes CSUMB did just that.
Anthony Velazquez (Gilroy HS) netted his third goal of season to get the Otters on the board, still trailing 1–2. Less than 300 seconds later,
Julian Salas (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood HS) got the equalizer for CSUMB with his second goal of the season off of a throw in from the corner. Salas was able to get behind the defense and convert the throw in from
Duce Bell (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) with a successful header, knotting the score at 2–2, sending the match into overtime.
"In the second half we switched some things and went after them, "said Head Coach
Rob Cummings (@RobCummings3). "I am proud of the boysfor their effort and the two great goals by us."
Cal State Monterey Bay took the momentum and experience into overtime, playing in their sixth OT of the season. However, Cal State San Bernardino did not get the memo as Debray Hollimon netted the clincher 1:56 in to overtime, sending the Otters off with a 3–2 loss.
CSUMB falls to 2–8–4, 1–6–2 CCAA while CSUSB moves to 9–4–0, 5–4–0 CCAA and move into fourth place in the conference standings. Cal State Monterey Bay will wrap their home schedule on Sunday, October 26, when they travel to Chico State to battle the Wildcats. Kick off is set for 2:00 p.m.
