Defensive Efforts Nullified By Late Wildcat Goals

Defense plays strong, but two late goals send Otters home with loss

CHICO, Calif --- Neither team was playing for a postseason spot in the match up between Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State as both teams battled back and forth for 79 minutes before Chico scored twice in a one minute and four second span, handing CSUMB the 0–2 loss; its ninth loss of the season.

Shortly into the first half the Otters were forced to play a man down when Julian Salas (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood HS) was handed a red card. However, the defense held true and Otter continue to push the game.

"The boys played well and we still kept pushing the game and didn't sit back, " said head coach Rob Cummings (@RobCummings3).

After a scoreless first half and defensive stalemate for a majority of the second half, it seemed that this one was headed to overtime. However, the Wildcats had other ideas, recording the first goal of the match in the 79th minute on a rocket off the foot of Justin Saul (1). Chico was not finished, coming back to score one minute and four seconds later on a shot by Carter Johnson. The late goals put Cal State Monterey Bay in a 0–2 deficit; one they would not be able to close.

"In the end I was proud of out fight (throughout the game). We look forward to Thursday and a chance to play spoiler," Cummings said optimistically.

While the Otters put up six different Otters took a shot in the match, however none were recorded as shots on goal. Goalkeeper Evan Drake (Sacramento Calif./El Camino HS) did record the only two saves of the match.

CSUMB drops to a record of 2–9–4, 1–7–2 CCAA while Chico moves to 8–6–2, 3–6–1 CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay will end the 2014 at home in Thursday, Oct. 30, when they take on Humboldt State at the Otter Sports Complex.  Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
