SEASIDE, Calif. — With all signs pointing to a tough night for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team, the Otters gave perhaps their best performance of the season Friday night only to fall to in overtime to Humboldt State 65–53 in The Kelp Bed.

Already short-handed with two of their top shooters out before the game due to injury and a family emergency, the Otters lost one of the CCAA's top passers when Nikki Beckman (Dublin/Ohlone College) went down to an injury midway through the second half. But they persevered, overcoming a 10-point deficit in the second half to forge a late lead before falling in extra time.

CSUMB (3-5, 0-5 CCAA) got a career-high 20 points off the bench from junior Jenna Bandy (Thousand Oaks HS), who bested her previous career high by four. Humboldt (5-4, 2-3) countered with 25 points from Kersey Wilcox. Nevertheless, the Otters took a 2-point lead into the final minute before a pair of Wilcox free throws tied the game at 51-51 with 16 seconds remaining.

Humboldt followed with a solid defensive possession and Bandy's running jumper from the free-throw line didn't fall, sending the game to overtime.

The clock struck midnight in overtime when the Otters went 1-for-9 from the floor, not scoring until Holly Holcomb (Ventura/Buena HS) made a tough layup with 63 seconds remaining and the Lumberjacks already holding a 7-point lead.

As always, free throws played a critical role against the Otters. As in all eight games this season, CSUMB's opponent shot more free throws. For the sevent time, Otters shot double-digit free throws fewer than their opponents.

This time, Humboldt was awarded a 32-11 edge from the stripe, making 23 to CSUMB's seven.
CSUMB returns to action and closes its current 3-game homestand by hosting CCAA co-leader Cal Poly Pomona Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
