Junior Lily Garza nabs six saves in 2OT loss at Stanislaus.
BOX SCORE TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team took No. 11 Cal State Stanislaus to the brink in double-overtime, but a breakaway goal from Sabrina Williamson in the 107th minute spoiled the Otter upset bid.
"It is unfortunate we did not come away with a point today," said CSUMB Head Coach
Erin Reinke. "We battled hard and played toe-to-toe with one of the top teams in the country for 106 minutes!"
At the 58:40 mark, the Otters got on the board when they converted on a free kick score just outside the box. Sophomore
Kristen Womack (Roseville/Woodcreek HS) tapped the ball back to junior
Jami Murray (Newbury/City College of San Francisco) who blasted the shot by a diving CSUS keeper Chelsea Lewandowski.
The Warriors responded just 14 seconds later when CCAA goal leader Karenee Demery volleyed the ball to the back of the net to make it 1-1.
After 49 minutes of scoreless action, Stanislaus took advantage of CSUMB in transition as Williamson took a pass from Demery, dribbled up and launched the ball over a charging
Lily Garza (Redwood City/City College of San Francisco).
Facing a season-high 21 shots, Garza came up big with six saves in her third start of the season.
"I'm proud of what the team has accomplished so far this season," Reinke said. "We have improved so much in a short period of time. We will be ready for Friday's and get the points we deserved."
The Otters (3-4-1, 2-3-1 CCAA) return home to host San Francisco State Friday, Oct. 4 at 3 p.m.
