CSUMB sees early lead fade away in 3-1 loss to CSUDH

BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team fell for the firs time this season as Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros posted a 3-1 victory Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Center.

"This is a tough pill to swallow, but today Dominguez was the better team today and deserved the result," said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings

After 25 minutes of highly competitive soccer, the Otters took a 1-0 lead on Servando Perez's (Guadalupe/Righetti HS) third goal of the season. A lead pass by Marco Rangal (Hollister/San Benito HS) set up Perez to draw CSUDH keeper Markus Dickerson out. Perez flipped the ball over Dickerson into an empty net from the top of the box.

Sophomore keeper Evan Drake (Sacramento/El Camino HS) appeared to give the Otters a big momentum boost when he stopped Aaron Salazar's penalty after CSUMB fouled inside the box in the 34th minute.

But the Toros evened the game at 1-1 with four minutes remaining in the first half when Alejndro Covarrubias put a Salazar's cross in the back of the net.

CSUDH took the lead and secured the win with back-to-back goals by Tony Alfaro (81st minute) and Wyatt Stucker (82nd minute).

"Now the test will be on Sunday on how we respond to this set back," Cummings said. "It is very young into the season and it's better to have this happen now where we can still make adjustments and regroup for Cal State L.A.

"I thought our effort was there, we just need to improve in some areas."

CSUMB (4-1-0, 2-1-0 CCAA) welcomes No. 7 Cal State L.A. to the Otter Sports Complex on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m.
