ARCATA – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team rallied late to secure a result on the road to close out its regular season schedule on the road against Cal Poly Humboldt, 3-3, Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field.
CSUMB battled back from a two-goal deficit to secure the draw against Cal Poly Humboldt. The final goal for Humboldt came in the very last minute of regulation, denying the Otters a comeback victory.
The home side, Cal Poly Humboldt, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period. Humboldt's Cooper Stephens scored at 25:06, assisted by Luke Gomes. Just over a minute later, Robert Somerville found the net, assisted by Shota Lam, putting the Otters in a tough spot.
CSUMB responded swiftly, with
Eric Vazquez-Acosta scoring at 28:54, assisted by
Will Seargeant, to cut the deficit to 2-1 before halftime.
The Otters were aggressive early, tallying 11 shots and 10 corner kicks in the first period alone, forcing Humboldt's keeper, Alvaro Nieves, to make four saves. The Otters' defensive effort, led by goalkeeper
Jacob Aiona, registered two saves in the opening period.
The Otters carried their momentum into the second half, completing the comeback to take a 3-2 lead.
Will Seargeant leveled the score at 62:48 with a goal assisted by
Alvaro Oseguera Meza and
Eric Vazquez-Acosta. With the score tied, the game intensified, leading to three yellow cards for Humboldt and two for the Otters early in the second period. The Otters took the lead at 79:16 when
Jack Dawson scored, assisted by
Jacob Burnison, giving the Otters a promising late lead.
Despite the Otters' rally and a strong defensive stand, the Lumberjacks managed to tie the game in the final minute. Shota Lam scored an unassisted goal at 89:52, before the final whistle, forcing the 3-3 draw. Goalkeeper
