Junior Alberto Anguiano scores his second goal of 2013 in 1-0 win over SSU.
BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – Junior forward
Alberto Anguiano's (Oxnard/Pacifica HS) first half goal was enough to lift the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Sonoma State Sunday afternoon.
The Otter remain undefeated thought their first four matches at 4-0-0 (2-0-0 in CCAA action). Sonoma State suffered its first loss in 2013, falling to 2-1-1, 1-1-0 CCAA).
"This was another hard fought conference game," said CSUMB Head Coach
Rob Cummings. "Sonoma is a great program with a lot of tradition and to be able to get a result from them was big."
Both teams fired four shots apiece in the first half with CSUMB getting the only ball past a keeper.
Freshman
Manuel Cazares (Panorama City/Daniel Pearl HS) stole the ball from the midfield and passed under one defender to Anguiano who two-touched it before sending it to the back of the net.
The intensity increased in the second half as both teams were given numerous yellow cards. SSU's Cody Martin and Cazares were each awarded yellow cards in the 79th. It was a second yellow for Cazares, which resulted in him getting ejected, and forcing the Otters to play down a player for the final 12 minutes.
Sophomore
Evan Drake (Sacramento/El Camino HS) and the Otter defense were able to hold of an aggressive Seawolf offense, facing 11 shots in the second half. Drake stopped four shots on goal for his second shutout of 2013.
"I thought we did some things well at the beginning of the game, but we need to continue to understand how to play consistent," Cummings said. "We are still learning and getting better.
"I am very proud of the team effort and it was huge for
Saydou (Kamara) and
Jovani (Delacruz) to come into the game not only being down to 10 players but stepping in as backs."
The Otters continue their five-game homestand on Friday, Sept. 20, hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m.
