CSUMB begins CCAA play with victory against Humboldt State

BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team won their third straight match in a 5-3 win over visiting Humboldt State on Friday afternoon.

The Otters (3-0-0, 1-0-0) scored four consecutive goals in the first half en route to their first CCAA victory.

"It was a great conference win for us," said CSUMB Head Coach Rob Cummings. "Humboldt is a solid team and we were able to do some good things at the beginning of the game that resulted in good scoring opportunities.

"However, we talked about the consistency and how we need to get better at that."

CSUMB took a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. On freshman Manuel Cazares' (Panorama City/Daniel Pearl HS) free kick, junior Alberto Anguiano's (Oxnard/Pacifica HS) shot found the back of the net at the 2:34 mark.  Sophomore Michael Brixey (Truckee HS) recorded his second goal of the season on a breakaway with junior Max Madrigal (Oxnard HS) giving the lead pass.

Prior to the opening half ended, the Otters registered two more goals at the feet of freshman Chris Koski (Cupertino/Monta Vista HS) and junior George Plakorus (Columbia, Mo/Hickman HS).  Senior Servando Perez (Guadalupe/Righetti HS) assisted in both goals alongside Anguiano and junior Anthony Velazquez (Golroy HS)

Madrigal scored CSUMB's lone goal in the second half on a scramble in front of the goal with Anguiano on the second to last touch.

HSU's Zach Hammond scored the first two goals for the Lumberjacks with the first one coming on a penalty kick.  The final Lumberjack goal came on a penalty kick rebound by Ryan Conner in the 77th minute.

Sophomore keeper Evan Drake (Sacramento/El Camino HS) collected five saves while HSU's keeper Javier Torres nabbed four.

CSUMB lost the battle of the shots to HSU, 9-14 but had a 5-3 corner kick advantage.

"I am proud of the teams effort," Cummings said. "Now we will look to get ready for another tough opponent in Sonoma."

CSUMB resumes CCAA play on Sunday, Sept. 15 against visiting Sonoma State with kickoff at 11:30 a.m.
