Junior Will Anderson broke the CSUMB season record for batters striking out while looking.
BOX SCORE STOCKTON, Calif. – Despite a strong outing by pitchers
Will Anderson (Pleasanton/Fresno State) and
Josh Eagle (Antioch/Sierra College) who allowed just two hits and no earned runs, the 7th-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay Otters fell 4-0 to Sonoma State in the opening game of the 2013 CCAA Tournament.
Untimely errors and offering first numerous times proved costly for the Otters.
After four shutout innings, Anderson gave up a leadoff walk to Sam Montgomery who stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. A sacrifice fly by Scott Harkin gave the Seawolves their first run.
The Otters threatened in the seventh when junior
Michael Lonsdale (Castro valley/Chabot College) singled to right center, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. SSU's George Asmus forced a ground out and got a strikeout to get out of the jam.
The Seawolves pulled away with three runs in the eighth, taking advantage of a leadoff walk and an Otter error.
Londsale led the Otters, going 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and a sac bunt. Anderson took the loss in spite of allowing only one hit and no earned runs in seven innings of work. He fanned seven but walked three and struck two batters.
SSU's starter Harmen Sidhu earned his ninth win after tossing six shutout innings and scattering four hits.
The Otters will face Chico State at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 10 in an elimination game.
