BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team clinched at least a share of the 2013 CCAA regular season title on Saturday after splitting a doubleheader with UC San Diego.
The split locked in CSUMB's (35-13, 27-11 CCAA) share of the program's first CCAA title. With Chico State sweeping Cal State L.A., both teams are now tied for second.
The
CCAA tournament is May 9-11 at
Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.
If the Otters win the series finale against UC San Diego on Sunday, May 5, the title will be theirs outright. First pitch is 11 a.m. with a senior day presentation prior to game time.
GAME 1: UCSD 6, CSUMB 1
The Otters saw their 11-game win streak come to an end with a 6-1 loss to the Tritons in the doubleheader opener.
UCSD got on the board first on Scott Liske's full-count solo homer in the opening frame.
Junior starter
Chris Daniels would retire 11 straight batters and hold the Tritons scoreless for five innings. In the seventh, Daniels gave up five runs that included a two-run homer by Nick La Face.
The Otters would prevent a shutout with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Senior
Victor Rasor-Thompson (San Diego/Univ. of San Diego) leadoff with a single and advanced 90 feet on a passed ball. Senior
Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister/San Benito HS) drove him home on a single up the middle.
GAME 2: CSUMB 7, UCSD 5
For the second time on Saturday, the Otters found themselves down after the first frame of play after Justin Rahn's three-run homer over the right center wall.
CSUMB bounced back with three of its own runs in the bottom of the second. Junior
Cannon Bernarding (San Jose/West Valley) put down a 2 RBI single down the middle and junior
Michael Lonsdale (Castro Valley/Chabot College) tied it on a sacrifice fly to center.

Jason Merjano (San Ramon/Sierra College) 2 RBI double gave CSUMB's its first lead of the day.
Both teams traded single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to end the score at 7-5 CSUMB.
Already the CSUMB season record holder in wins and strikeouts, sophomore
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) picked up his 11th victory and added seven more strikeouts to raise his total to 86 in 2013
. Junior A.J. Quintero (Vacaville/Sacramento City College) earned his ninth save, a CCAA-best by three, after one inning of relief consisting of fanning two batters and forcing a groundout.
