BOX SCORE ST. GEORGE, Utah – CCAA regular season champion Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team's remarkable season came to an end Saturday in the NCAA Division II Tournament playoffs at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Otters were limited to just five hits by Sonoma State in their second elimination game, falling to the Seawolves 4-1. CSUMB defeated CCAA Tournament Champion Cal State L.A. on Friday, 8-1 in the first sayonara game.
CSUMB finished with a 39-17 overall record, 13 wins more than last year's program record.
The Otters got a strong performance all three pitchers beginning with starter
Jordan Helmkamp (Aliso Viejo/Saddleback College) who kept CSUMB in the game after giving up only three runs in five innings. Junior
Rickey Guerrero (Stockton/MPC) threw two shutout innings in relief, relinquishing only one hit while junior NCBWA and Daktronics west region first team selection
A.J. Quintero (Vacaville/Sacramento City College) closed the game in the eighth.
CSUMB threatened in the opening frame with a pair of two-out singles by senior
Brian Haggett (Hollister/West Valley College) and junior
Mark Hurley (Hollister/College of San Mateo) but wasn't able to execute a run.
The Seawolves took a 2-0 lead on a Jackson Stogner single after Scott Harkin had a leadoff double in the third and back-to-back doubles by Garrett Schwartz and Devon Zenn in the fourth.
CSUMB's cut the Seawolf lead to 2-1 in the fifth when senior
Jason Merjano (San Ramon/Sierra College) leadoff with a double and scored on an RBI groundout by
Jesse Olson (Citrus Heights/Sierra College).
SSU's Harkin opened the bottom of the frame with a home run. The Seawolves added another insurance run eighth on a RBI fielder's choice.
Garcia led the Otters with a two hits while Merjano recorded a double and stolen base.
